What Would the Democrats Do? (Rangel calls again for the draft)

Nov. 2, 2006

What would the Democrats do if they take control of Congress? Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., offered his predictions to Sam Donaldson and Mark Halperin on ABC News Now's "Politics Live."

Rangel is currently the ranking member on the House Ways and Means Committee. If Democrats pick up six seats in next week's crucial midterm elections and gain the majority, Rangel would become chairman of the committee.

Donaldson suggested that Democrats seem to be all over the lot on how to handle the war in Iraq. Rangel countered, "The Democrats believe we should withdraw. … This election is a referendum on the president, a referendum on the war. Once the pubic says that there is no place for a military victory, we have to find some way to take our young men and women out of harm's way."

If Democrats regain control, Rangel said the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President Dick Cheney, and the president will have to work with the Congress and the American people to "make certain that we get the heck on out of Iraq."

Rangel was careful when pressed on what the Democrats would do about taxes if they regain the leadership.

Some Republicans believe Rangel and the committee would undo the Bush administration's tax cuts that are set to expire in 2010. "It doesn't make sense to be increasing people's taxes unless it's part of a bigger package," Rangel said, while refusing to pledge he would not raise taxes.

Instead, the possible future chairman of House Ways and Means diplomatically emphasized, "I will not be the powerful chairman. For us to succeed, it's going to take Democrats, Republicans and the administration has to be cooperative."

Rangel reiterated his feeling that the military draft should be reinstated. "I truly believe that if we had a draft system, we would never have our men and women in Iraq. Everyone wants to fight with someone else's children."

Rangel insisted that a new draft should be fair, with people from every part of society coming to a national public service.

Rangel is using the same tired mottos to try and bring back the draft that the same party and polical loudmouths used to get rid of the draft.

The important thing is that Rangel, a Democrat, is speaking of bringing back the draft two days before a mid-term election.
This will resonate with undecided voters and will lose votes for the Dems.

Rangel IS an idiot who doesn't know how or when to keep his big mouth shut. Thankfully.

The draft is a reality today. In the event of Congressional OR Executive approval, the boards reconvene. Sorry to bear contrary news. It does not matter which party is in power. Better that the party of Jon Carry is NOT in power.

This proves he's a total idiot.

"Everyone wants to fight with someone else's children"? Guess it wasn't someone elses children in the other wars.

"...new draft should be fair, with people from every part of society coming to a national public service." So the old drafts weren't fair? And then just how does Mr. Rangle propose to have a draft that singles out certain segments of the population? Sounds like profiling to me.

Yes, indeed.

Kamrade Rangel's theory is that if we institute a draft, we will lose the will to fight. The armed forces will become just one more useless social welfare scam.

Voting straight GOP will be like taking my ballot and shoving it right down his throat!

When I voted I checked the box for straight Republican. In any race in which there was only an unopposed DemocRAT, I didn't vote. In one race there was a DemocRAT and a Libertarian running but no Republican, so I voted for the Libertarian.

He's doing this now because when they brought this issue out the last time Republicans got blamed for being the authors. It's a scare tactic. And the electorate isn't educated, so it works pretty well for the Dems.

DEMOCRAT calling for a Draft for STUPID reasons.

Sorry, 50 USC is not a stupid reason in my mind. I have had some great friends and family volunteer and be conscripted under this provision. Please understand that both parties are aware of this. If you have sons, or friends that have sons between 18 and 26, encourage them to do the right thing. I did it, and my family has done it. The draft (SSS) is not the evil thing that the Dems make it to be. For if a young man does not register, it creates a problem in volunteering, educational finance, and the whole ball of wax.

Rangel has no idea how nutty he sounds, or what the logical consequence of his statements might be. All he knows about the military and war, he "learned" via leftis perceptions of Viet Nam. On the one hand, being a Democrat, he's into forced "equitability" and loves the idea of being able to snatch up the unwilling. On the other hand, he wants to create opposition to this war and any war, and sees this as the way to accomplish that.

Trouble is, leading up to this election, he's the one advocating a return to the draft, and he's a Democrat. Who fears this sort of thing the most? Young, leftist college students. He's just alienated a fair number of potential Democrat voters.
