Democrats, on the Offensive, Could Gain Both Houses
Washigton Post ^ | Sunday, November 5, 2006; Page A01 | Dan Balz and David S. Broder

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows some narrowing in the Democratic advantage in House races. The survey gives the Democrats a six-percentage-point lead nationally among likely voters asked which party they prefer for Congress. It was 14 points two weeks ago, but this remains a larger advantage than they have had in recent midterm elections......Bush's approval rating stands at 40 percent among all Americans and 43 percent among registered voters, a small but statistically insignificant increase in the past two weeks. About twice as many strongly disapprove of him as strongly approve.

Independents favor Democrats by an 18-point margin, but that is less than the 28-point advantage Democrats enjoyed two weeks ago.

The poll also showed that the Republican strategy of trying to make Democrats an unacceptable alternative may be working, at least at the margins.

Two weeks ago, 55 percent said Democratic members of Congress deserved reelection. In the new poll, that shrank to 48 percent. But Republicans remain stuck in the high thirties on the same question.

Funny...recall the 15% estimate that in 2004 Kerry's Democratic Media figured they'd give HIM? Well, THERE IS AN INVISIBLE HAND (God is not mocked)....in 2006 that same Kerry just gave US an edge....

Actually, 15% was 1/4 of the true 2004 Kerry democratic media advantage vs, Bush, he'd never had a CHANCE had the truth about him been objectively told.

Yeah, leave it to the scumbag Washington Post to square the above lead paragraph with the headline.

The caption of this article is INCREDIBLE and simply BREATH-TAKING!! Is the WaPo kidding? Their own Congressional generic ballot goes from Dems +14 to Dems +6 in a short period of time, and all they can think of is Dems "could" win both houses of Congress? This is the clearest evidence yet of journalistic gross negligence and malpractice (outside of the NY Times, of course).

I bet WaPo editors debated even PUBLISHING this final poll at ALL! I guess the next best thing was for them to spin the heck out of the headline. The Sunday morning shows will indeed be interesting tomorrow morning.

Buckle yourselves in, fellow GOP'ers. . .

Yep, they're on the offensive. Kinda reminds me of the Battle of the Bulge. They've went all out, conquering territory at a fast clip, ran out of gas, and then were crushed.

My daughter doesn't understand all the issues and was asking me whom to vote for. She thinks the Democrats are nasty, having worked doing opinion polls for them. I really don't understand the finer points of some of the issues and don't like to tell anyone how to vote, but I explained the ballot, be sure to fill it out carefully so it doesn't get rejected on a technicality, and gave her my list of Republicans who were running but whose parties weren't indicated on the ballot nor the local official website. I called local Rebpublican headquarters to get them. It's all I can do to keep up with the main players and tune out the bashing. Then she said something about not voting. I told her if she doesn't vote, it is giving them a vote. I have tried to explain the differences, over time, on the two sides as best and fairly as I could. It's kind of scary how difficult it is to get truly informed in between the mud and slogans being flung by both sides. I honestly don't think a lot of Democrats have thought through the issues either, they are too locked into Bush being an idiot and moron, etc. If the war appeared to be going better, I doubt they'd be hammering away at that the way they are doing, but if it weren't that, it would be something else. It's not that I see all Republicans as representing all my views or being squeaky clean either; I just thing so many Democrats have just lost it and gone off the deep end. I hope people will tire of it, but some love to hate. Somebody.

it's not only the dead. Laura Ingraham has been pointing out all the muslims here in the US who won't be voting for pubbies either. The DNC has the terrorist vote locked up as well. And amongst academia types, Bush is dropping to new lows.

More excellent news, although I really never trusted the media polls, some of them try to be "more accurate" in their last polling before Elections Day to save the face and some credibility but they can never be accurate enough for me. We should have learned our lessons already regarding the biased media polls from the many elections before but in particular the last three elections.

I think Carry's "botched joke" has caused "the cows to come home to roost" for the DemocRATS. (Sorry Leslie but I love that line).

If the President is at 43% of registered voters, he's probably at least at 45% among likely voters!

They missed pointing how how much of an advantage the Dems have in the GOTV effort with dead people.

All MSM polls are crap including this one, but points of interest from this one include:

- Bush's approval rating is higher in this poll than it has been since early January 2006.
- The party demographics are 33% Dem, 34% Republican and 30% Independent (which is MUCH closer to typical actual voting results that other MSM polls)
- The bottomline in this poll is that the basic numbers for each question haven't shifted much in all the years they've been asked. That is significant because the MSM keep trying to tell us that there is a huge wave of dissatisfaction affecting voters this year that will have a major impact on elections. There is absolutely ZERO evidence of that in this poll.

1. Do you approve or disapprove of the way George W. Bush is handling his job as president? Do you approve/disapprove strongly or somewhat?

This is a polling trick. If "approve" and "disapprove" switched places, the results would be the opposite. The subconscious mind remembers the last option the most. It is the last word it heard, and the respondent unconsciously responds to it.

Now reread the question again....

1. Do you disapprove/approve of the way George W. Bush is handling his job as president? Do you disapprove/approve strongly or somewhat?

"Feel" the difference? It's slight, but the first question was negative in nature. The second was positive in nature.
