Missouri voters: Amendment 2 IS pro-cloning; vote no!

Posted on 11/03/2006 9:21:34 PM PST by Sun

To clone or not to clone? That’s the question. But it's not the question Missourians will be asked in November when they vote on Amendment 2. The question they will see in the voting booth is different from the actual language of the Constitutional Amendment.

When you see Amendment 2 at your polling place, you will be asked to decide whether to "ban human cloning or attempted cloning." Sounds good so far, right? Who's in favor of human cloning anyway?

But the 2,100-word Constitutional Amendment—which you won't see on election day—actually creates legal protection for human cloning. Hard to believe? It's true. Amendment 2 only outlaws reproductive cloning, which no one in Missouri (or anywhere else on earth) is doing.

Meanwhile, it protects anyone who wants to clone human beings for science experiments. Amendment 2 glosses over the issue of lab-created human life with complicated phrases like "Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer." But cloning is cloning, and Amendment 2 would put this ethically questionable practice beyond the reach of state law.

Amendment 2 is "2 tricky." And the human-cloning "bait and switch" is just the beginning.

You're being duped. Landeraepi is a shill for the pro-amendment 2 side.

Again, have you not read my previous posts?!

I've read enough of your posts to know you're putting on an act. Don't try to dupe people. Be honest about your stance.

Okay, I am not overly active on chat forums. I admit that. I just joined FreeRepublic. I admit that, too. But how dare you try to tell me that I'm here to dupe people when all I'm doing is telling everyone about how I was duped!

Are you kidding me?

"Are we the victims of a reverse-psychology campaign here?" No "we" aren't -- but you're giving it a good shot! Nice try.

Sure, you come on here feigning outrage that the pro side would hand out "FRAUDULENT copies of the bill." And then, SHAZAM! By, golly, they're not fraudulent at all. Gee, maybe there is more to this than I thought! Quite resourceful for your first day here!

Yeah, it is silly that you would think someone who has a track record of posts for 6 years is a shill!

Okay, six years. Good for you.

I give up. I'll go try to be honest somewhere else. Learn some manners, please.

Oh, you don't need to go somewhere else to be honest. Try doing it right here. Just tell the class that you're really in support of Amendment 2 and you're just trying to lead them to that conclusion by pretending to be "confused", when you know the score all along. Have a nice day! :-)

This bill outlaws creating blastocysts for use in these experiments.

No, it doesn't. If you don't create a blastocyst you don't get stem cells.

That means the only blastocysts that can be used are the ones that are already in existence

Once you get the stem cells from a blastocyst it is no longer viable. It can't be reused. Where are all the new stem cells to come from?

Somatic cell transfer is nothing more than fancy language for cloning. If the egg is fertilized, conception has taken place.

That passage in the bill is saying that a later General Assembly of the Missouri State Senate & HoR can't use a backdoor means later by which to "gag" this amendment by redirecting the funding that's ALREADY there.

There IS NO funding already in place. That's the key.
Once the Constitution is amended any funding that goes to this cannot be redirected unless another Constitutional amendment takes place.

If it's already legal why amend the Constitution to make it legal?
There's only one reason, something fishy is in the air.

Constitutions shouldn't be amended by default, is my opinion.

Poor amendments, undeserving of your support, shouldn't get an abstention, but instead, should get a "No" vote.

There are all sorts of ojectives to this the way it is crafted and they aren't clear and concise.

"I live in St. Louis, and today I was approached on the street by a couple of pharmacy students who handed me what they SAID was a copy of the actual amendment and told me to "read it before you go to the polls and vote on it."

So I get halfway down the first page, and I see:

(1) No person may clone or attempt to cone a human being;
(2) No human blastocyst may be produced by fertilization solely for the purpose of stem cell research;
(4) No person may ... purchase or sell human blastocysts or eggs for stem cell research or stem cell therapie and cures

The whole thing goes on like that. They've sunk to a new low... handing out FRAUDULENT copies of the bill. And the university PAYS for the copies, I'm sure — how convenient."

This is low, but people who are pro-death aren't above deceit.

I wonder if the students even knew the truth.

"If I hadn't accidentally seen a show on EWTN on the Missouri
Amendment 2, I wouldn't have realized what a mendacious piece of work
the "pro" campaign is.
That show had the best, most complete discussion I've seen in the media
(and I'm not a Catholic)"

Glad you now know the truth, and I hope other voters will, too.

"Just think of all the mindless clones the Dem's could muster to vote for them."

They should figure out if antilifer groups are FOR this bill, and pro-lifers are against it, it must be pro-cloning.

"Yes, it was written to be tricky....so much so that it even fooled our esteemed ex-Senator Danforth and his doctor father. I am sooo disappointed. It looks like it's on track to pass. On the upside, it should also bring out the conservative voters which can only help Talent."

MAYBE pro-lifers will get out the truth on time - keep praying so the bill won't pass and so that Talent will win this important race.

Dude, somatic cell nuclear transfer is cloning. The amendment specifically endorses SCNT, ie; CLONING.

Furthermore the amendment removes the purse strings from elected legislators and puts it in the hand of unelected technocrats, FASCISM.

Clear now?

"My legal questions is, if it's already legal - Why try to insert it into the Missouri Constitution?"

Common sense!
