WHY IS JACK SCARED TO DEBATE? REASON NUMBER 3: HE DOESN'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW HE SAID WE COULD SAFELY REDEPLOY AMERICAN FORCES FROM IRAQ TO OKINAWA (WHICH IS IN JAPAN, A VEEEEEEEEEERY LONG WAYS AWAY)
Friday, November 3, 2006
(MONONGAHELA, November 3) -- Washington County Commissioner and Pennsylvania 12th district Republican Congressional nominee Diana Irey -- responding to Jack Murtha's refusal to meet with her to debate the issues, despite newspaper editorials urging him to debate, a League of Women Voters offer to host and sponsor a debate, and local television stations' offer to air the debate -- today released this statement:
"More than two weeks ago, we began our 21-part series, 'Why doesn't Jack want to debate?' wherein I suggest 21 reasons Jack Murtha might be refusing to debate me in public. So far, we've listed 18 reasons Mr. Murtha wouldn't want to debate.
"Today I offer reason number 3 Jack Murtha is scared to debate me: because HE DOESN'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW HE SAID WE COULD SAFELY REDEPLOY AMERICAN FORCES FROM IRAQ TO OKINAWA. OKINAWA, JAPAN. A VERY, VERY, VERY LONG WAYS AWAY.
"On Sunday, June 16, 2006, Jack Murtha was the featured guest on NBC's 'Meet the Press,' hosted by Tim Russert. It was here that Jack Murtha introduced the 'Okinawa Option.' The exchange was revealing, so we'll include it in full:
MR. RUSSERT: You say redeploy. Again, [White House strategist] Mr. [Karl] Rove challenges that comment. Let's listen and give you again a chance to respond to the White House.
(Videotape, Monday):
MR. ROVE: Congressman Murtha said, "Let's redeploy them immediately to another country in the Middle East. Let's get out of Iraq and go to another country." My question is, what country would take us? What country would say after the United States cut and run from Iraq, what country in the Middle East would say, "Yeah. Paint a big target on our back and then you'll cut and run on us." What country would say that? What country would accept our troops?
(End videotape)
MR. RUSSERT: What's your response?
REP. MURTHA: There's many countries understand the importance of stability in the Middle East. This is an international problem. We, we use 20 million barrels of oil a day. China's the second largest user. All these countries understand you need stability for the energy supply that's available in the Middle East. So there's many, many countries.
MR. RUSSERT: Who?
REP. MURTHA: Kuwait's one that will take us. Qatar, we already have bases in Qatar. So Bahrain. All those countries are willing to take the United States. Now, Saudi Arabia won't because they wanted us out of there in the first place. So -- and we don't have to be right there. We can go to Okinawa. We, we don't have -- we can redeploy there almost instantly. So that's not -- that's, that's a fallacy. That, that's just a statement to rile up people to support a failed policy wrapped in illusion.
MR. RUSSERT: But it'd be tough to have a timely response from Okinawa.
REP. MURTHA: Well, it -- you know, they -- when I say Okinawa, I, I'm saying troops in Okinawa. When I say a timely response, you know, our fighters can fly from Okinawa very quickly. And - and -- when they don't know we're coming. There's no question about it. And, and where those airplanes won't -- came from I can't tell you, but, but I'll tell you one thing, it doesn't take very long for them to get in with cruise missiles or with, with fighter aircraft or, or attack aircraft, it doesn't take any time at all. So we, we have done -- this one particular operation, to say that that couldn't have done, done -- it was done from the outside, for heaven's sakes.
"Okinawa is 4,200 nautical miles from Iraq as the crow flies -- or 8,400 miles round-trip.
"In order for U.S. attack jets to deploy to Iraq from Okinawa, they would have to fly over China and Iran. I'm not at all sure the Chinese and Iranian Governments would grant overflight rights -- in fact, I'm quite sure they would not -- but let's leave that obvious problem aside for the moment.
"The maximum range for an F-16 Eagle with external fuel tanks and 2,000 pounds of ordnance is 740 miles. Just to GET THERE from Okinawa, then, would require SIX mid-air refuelings.
"Then, of course, you've got the other obvious problem in 'redeploying' to Okinawa -- to wit, the Okinawans don't want us there already. Surely somebody with Jack Murtha's vaunted connections to the Pentagon knows that.
"Jack Murtha has taken to spouting nonsense. His 'Okinawa Option' would be one of the most hilarious things to come along in years -- if the topic weren't so serious.
"No wonder he doesn't want to debate me.
"It's time to send in a mom to clean up the mess. Next Tuesday, voters in the 12th Congressional District will have the opportunity to do just that."
For those keeping score, here's the running scorecard:
21 REASONS JACK IS SCARED TO DEBATE: HE DOESN'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW:
21. He has voted himself 12 straight pay raises.
20. He has voted to raise his own pay from $42,500/yr to $165,500/yr.
19. He tried to take a $50,000 cash bribe from an undercover agent for the FBI.
18. His "investment defense" was nothing more than a ruse to hide his $50,000 cash bribe from an undercover agent for the FBI.
17. He wrongfully accused U.S. Marines of cold-blooded murder.
16. He voted against allowing military personnel to assist the Department of Homeland Security with border security in times of a threat to national security.
15. He voted against legislation to fulfill recommendations of the 9/11 Commission to prohibit illegal aliens from obtaining driver's licenses or other official ID cards; to ensure terrorists do not enter or remain in the U.S. through loopholes in asylum or deportation laws; and to strengthen border security by completing the San Diego border fence.
14. He voted against stiffer sentences for illegal aliens convicted of violent crimes or drug trafficking.
13. He voted against increasing funds to help state and local governments arrest and detain illegal aliens.
12. He voted against the Border Control, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005.
11. He voted against the Secure Fence Act of 2006.
10. He voted against protecting traditional marriage.
9. He voted to allow liberal judges to overturn a law protecting traditional marriage.
8. Contrary to what he says now about his role in Abscam, he didn't just say 'no' to a $50,000 cash bribe.
7. He once hosted a welcome back party for a former congressional staffer who'd just been convicted of taking an illegal bribe.
6. He pushed for a new law to require taxpayers to pay the legal bills of Members of Congress who had been convicted of taking bribes.
5. He voted against giving U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies the power to wiretap suspected terrorists when they call associated in the United States.
4. He voted against giving U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies the power to properly interrogate and bring to trial terrorists who plot against the United States.
3. He said we could safely redeploy American forces from Iraq to Okinawa. Okinawa, Japan. A very, very, very long ways away.
BIG BUMP
And the MSM tries to pass off this old fool as a military expert??? The voters in his district are largely Democrat--Reagan Democrats! Their eyes are open and Humpty-Dumpty Murtha is going to fall!
