1. I wonder how long the NYT has had this bottled up in the safe??

2. I wonder what happened that forced them to get this out a few days before the election, surely they could have held it for a few more days??

O.K., jveritas broke this story on this website late last night. I woke up this morning thinking it would be on every other Free Republic thread today.

I was wodering when this story was going to surface. Am I wrong in thinking this should be the big story of the day? I haven't turned the TV on yet because I thought I'd get the "scoop" from Freepers first.

FOXNews has NOT seized on it. They reported it as a non-story basically, saying this info could be obtained almost anywhere on the internet.

Is there anything we can do to get coverage of the NYT astonishing admission? We just can't let this pass. Does anyone have any contacts?

"Saddam Hussein's regime was perhaps only a year away from developing nuclear weapons at the time of the US invasion."

The relevant paragraph in the NYT story is:

"Among the dozens of documents in English were Iraqi reports written in the 1990s and in 2002 for United Nations inspectors in charge of making sure Iraq had abandoned its unconventional arms programs after the Persian Gulf war. Experts say that at the time, Mr. Hussein’s scientists were on the verge of building an atom bomb, as little as a year away."

I'd say this refers to the state of affairs at the time of the Persian Gulf War - 'at the time' being 'at the time of the Persian Gulf War'. In which case, this article is saying what we all know, Saddamn had a nuclear weapons program up to the end of the Persian Gulf War.

Feel free to disagree, but I wonder how many people here jumped on the thread without reading the article?

No he didn't.
Did you see it?
Then it didn't exist.
Like all the evidence against clinton at his impeachment trial. If the dims didn't see it it didn't exist.

It seems like everyone is making this mistake. The paragraph is poorly worded, but you are right, it is talking about the end of the Persian Gulf war, not 2002. The 2002 part relates to reports written by the Iraqis about their nuclear program as it was at that time, at the end of the Persian Gulf war.

Ok - I'll believe it when I see it - not that Saddam was building a nuke, but that the NY Times would print a story to support the need for the current Iraq war two days before an election - it just doesn't seem possible. A huge cold front must be heading towards hell.
