(MONONGAHELA, November 2) -- Washington County Commissioner and Pennsylvania 12th district Republican Congressional nominee Diana Irey -- giving Jack Murtha one last chance to follow in the footsteps of his party's last presidential candidate, U.S. Senator John Kerry, and apologize for offensive remarks Murtha made in May of this year, when he wrongly declared as fact that U.S. Marines at Haditha had "killed innocent civilians in cold blood" before the first Marine was charged, before the first court-martial was convened, before the first Marine was convicted -- today held a press conference outside U.S. Rep. Murtha's district office and released this statement:
"We're here today for a simple reason: one more time, we are going to give Jack Murtha a chance to apologize.
"A chance to apologize for an ugly distortion of the truth …
"A chance to apologize for an outrageous slander of the brave men and women who wear our nation's colors …
"A chance to apologize for declaring as FACT that which is NOT.
"On May 17 of this year, Congressman Jack Murtha declared that United States Marines, deployed to the Iraqi village of Haditha, had -- and I quote -- 'killed innocent civilians in cold blood.'
"He declared this as fact before the first Marine was charged … before the first court-martial was convened … before the first Marine was convicted.
"In so doing, he acted as prosecutor, judge, and jury.
"His rush to judgment violated one of the fundamental principles we Americans hold dear -- that a man is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
"Jack Murtha, of all people, should understand and acknowledge and respect that concept.
"When asked to explain how he could say something so outrageous before all the facts were in, he said he had gotten his information directly from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Michael Hagee.
"But Commandant Hagee's spokesman said that the Commandant hadn't even MET with Jack Murtha before the Congressman made his comments -- in fact, the Commandant did not meet with Congressman Murtha until a full week AFTER he had made his remarks.
"To date, not a single Marine has been charged … let alone tried or convicted.
"But Jack Murtha continues to stand by his statement.
"For the last two days, the political world has been in an uproar over an off-the-cuff remark made by Senator John Kerry about our troops.
"What Senator Kerry said was wrong. It was offensive. It was an insult.
"It took Senator Kerry two full days to realize he was wrong and to apologize for his offensive remarks.
"But he did the right thing. He acknowledged his error, and he apologized.
"Interestingly, Jack Murtha came to Senator Kerry's defense on television yesterday.
"He called Senator Kerry's comments 'a mistake, an unfortunate mistake,' and insisted that Senator Kerry had not meant to denigrate the men and women of our armed forces.
"It has been almost six MONTHS now, and Jack Murtha still has not apologized for HIS offensive remarks.
"What is Jack Murtha waiting for?
"Jack Murtha has a choice to make -- he can follow in the footsteps of his party's last presidential standard-bearer, and show that he's man enough to admit a mistake …
"Or he can continue to stonewall.
"The choice is his.
"But on Tuesday, the voters of the 12th District will have a choice to make, too.
"Perhaps Jack Murtha should remember THAT."

I have a question in regard to the Murtha-Irey race. Tonight on the ABC Pittsburgh Channel 4 TV station, the ads that Irey is running about Murtha and Abscam were picked apart on the local evening news with the conclusion of the newsperson doing the picking that all the claims Irey makes in the ads are "unconfirmed." When they returned to the usual suspects reading their notes at the news desk after the segment, one of the talking heads announced that "Murtha is ahead in ALMOST all the polls of this race." First, I thought there were NO POLLS. At least that's what I've read on other FR posts about the race. My question is if there are polls (plural) what do the rest of them say if Murtha is ahead in ALMOST all of them????? Hmmmm...
I really don't know what they mean by saying the ABSCAM mess with Murtha is "unconfirmed." He's on an FBI sting tape for anyone to see that he said he might be interested in the offered bribe at a later time.
Two polls over a month old were done. One was ridiculous, the other showed him leading 55% to 45%. That was before the ABSCAM tape was released. It's felt by many that Diana Irey is now ahead but there have been no more polls.
The news media has supported Murtha in the past and they are supporting him now. Don't believe what a newscaster is reading off a prepared script.
Diana Irey is going to beat Murtha.

Diana's relentless. She hops on every opportunity possible to hold Murtha accountable. The fact that no polls are revealed speaks volumes. Whatever else happens Election Day, I want this one, for Diana, the most.
