Republican gubernatorial front-runner Charlie Crist says he was perfectly clear in opposing governmental intervention in the Terri Schiavo case.
He spoke out loudly.
And he was silent.
Loudly silent.
The day after limping through a tough nationally televised debate, the Republican attorney general wanted to talk about his plans to slash taxes. Instead reporters questioned him about his debate assertion that, Yes, I did speak out against Congress trying to force the reinsertion of the severely brain-damaged womans feeding tube in 2005.
Crist did not publicly express his opposition to the Schiavo intervention until April 2006, more than a year after the Pinellas womans death. But he maintained on Tuesday that he forcefully expressed his opposition from the start.
I spoke loudly, Crist said in Tallahassee. I think its important that when issues like that come up and you believe that government is the appropriate place for it that you act that out, and you walk the walk, and dont just talk the talk.
The attorney general noted that his office by not going to court and pushing the agenda on that issue, that was speaking out louder than anybody else did in Florida.
This is one of many issues from insurance reform to abortion and civil unions where Crist has been accused of ambiguity or trying please all sides.
Contrary to his comments Tuesday, during the Republican gubernatorial primary in August he stressed to the weekly newspaper of the Florida Baptist Convention that his office helped the governors office with legal work to keep Schiavo alive, even though he personally had qualms.
I dont remember that, but Ill check on it and see, Crist said when asked about that interview with the Florida Baptist Witness.
Gov. Jeb Bush came to his would-be successors defense. He spoke out to me, Bush told reporters. Crist, however, said he never directly talked to Bush.
There are few issues in the political realm so black and white as the Terri Schiavo case. People either supported the state and federal government intervening to keep her alive or they didnt.
But Crist is the second statewide candidate recently to face questions about how he acted during the Schiavo end-of-life controversies that erupted in 2003 in the Legislature and in 2005 in both the Legislature and Congress.
Democratic Attorney General candidate Walter Skip Campbell, a state senator from Broward County, has been on the defensive this week for having voted to keep Schiavo alive and later criticizing the governmental intervention. Crists involvement in the Schiavo case may be the only common ground between the Schindler family, Terri
Schiavos parents and siblings who fought to keep her alive, and her husband, Michael Schiavo, who insisted his wife did not want to be kept alive in a persistent vegetative state. Both sides have criticized Crist.
When he said in that debate that hes going to be a leader, my heart dropped. Hes not a leader, hes a follower, Michael Schiavo said Tuesday. If he really wanted to stand up he would have said, 'No, this is wrong. The government should stay out of this. ... Charlie Crist did not say a word, he was nowhere to be found. Hes a coward.
Terri Schiavos father, Bob Schindler, wrote an essay in August accusing Crist of snubbing the familys pleas for him to help their efforts. Florida Atty. Gen. Charlie Crist let my daughter die. He had it within his authority to save her life, but he turned a blind eye to her suffering, Schindler wrote.
The Florida Democratic Party issued a release saying Crist lied about his role in the Schiavo case, but at a brief campaign stop at Arco-Iris restaurant in Tampa on Tuesday, Davis would only say that Crist misrepresented his position.
I was up fighting George Bush and the entire United States Congress, both political parties, and Charlie Crist was unwilling to take a position, Davis said.
Davis, trailing in polls and campaign money, is hoping his debate performance Monday night will cut Crists advantages. No statewide viewership numbers were available Tuesday, but in the Tampa Bay area about 152,000 households tuned in a ratings jump for that time slot on WFLA and that doesnt include those who watched on MSNBC.

They come back stronger and stronger. Jodi is very foolish if she thinks she is safe.
Amazing photo. Probably something like one-fifth of the Holocaust victims died on those [expletive deleted] closed trains before they ever got to the death camps. I take it this train was simply abandoned at war's end?
Aw, seethe away :-) These people deserve a good scalding.
Kind of uppity for a slut gal making little bastards babies without benefit of the clergy.
No, dearie, she didn't do it to herself. The autopsy report ruled that out. Do you have any other theories? Mine is that somebody did it to her. The same somebody could do it to you. Think about it. You can't rule this out, can you?
To rub it in in the most hurtful way, Jody and Michael got the blessing to be married in a Catholic Church.
Somebody blew it. The Church must have some scruples about marrying an adulterer -- who famously put his former wife to death -- and his floozie.
I'm about to be up the creek without a laptop -- off for a week for Thanksgiving with family. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday! I know you all know why we give thanks, and to Whom. Thank God for Terri.
Amen T'wit. Poor Terri, not even a sip of water in America.
You will be missed!
Father God, we praise you and thank you for our lives and the opportunities
you give us to serve you.
Please shower Terri's family and those of her supporters with
a special measure of love and blessing as our nation looks to
you this Thanksgiving Day. You alone are worthy to be praised!!
We love you Lord.
Bishop Lynch was no friend of Terri. Bishop Lynch had to approve the marriage of Michael and Jodi in a Catholic Church. After all, they were not John Doe and Jane Doe walking through the door.
What is the chain of command involved in not excommunicating Bishop Lynch? Given that the Pope himself spoke out against Terri's murder, it would be hard to say the Church saw her death as anything less even if some apostate diocese thought otherwise. I see no way the marriage of Michael and Jodi could be possibly considered proper by any observant Catholic.
Mercifully, the Bp. was overshadowed at Pinellas Park by a giant in the Faith, by one who truly followed teachings, Monsignor Malanowski.
Myself, I would not place any more value in the pronouncements of that bishop than I would in the witches of Eastwick.
In recent days we got hit by the media and attendant frustrations over a murderer who got away with his crime. Perhaps, O.J. shows some remorse, perhaps he gloats over getting away with his one deed of blatant murder, but just maybe, it weighs on whatever conscience he may have. Does anything at all weigh on Mikey outside of his own being?
Naturally for many of us, we draw analogy to Mikey and wonder how he sees things these days. Carrie Hutchens in the Dakota Voice expounds on Mikey.
I have been waiting for Michael Schiavo to make the correction on his PAC/Blog site, but as of this writing, he still hasn't. So what is up with that? Not his style to admit he made a mistake? Oh well... heaven forbid anyone might expect him to admit he was wrong and apologize for allegedly spreading untruths.
Michael hopes his little site will influence voters? And on this little site -- during an election period -- he appears to have made false statements about Marilyn Musgrave, a candidate in Colorado? "But just minutes after taking my seat, I noticed a flurry of activity around my seat including about four uniformed police officers who were - I would learn later - called in by Musgrave staffers and asked to remove me from the building."
He further states, "After the police talked with obviously irritated Musgrave staffers and the debate organizer, the Musgrave campaign complained that my seat, next to the timekeeper, was inappropriate because - get this - Marilyn Musgrave would have to look at me. In an effort to appease the Musgrave camp, the debate organizers moved the timekeeper to the other side of the stage - about 15 seats away."

This is the third in an occasional series of exclusive articles in which leading conservatives who served in the Reagan Administration explain how they believe the principles of Reagan conservatism ought to be applied today and in the coming years. This week, Gary Bauer, who served as President Reagans chief domestic policy advisor, addresses right-to-life issues.
My administration is dedicated to the preservation of America as a free land, and there is no cause more important for preserving that freedom than affirming the transcendent right to life of all human beings, the right without which no other rights have meaning.

Schiavo Saga
Last year, as the Terri Schiavo saga unfolded, I couldnt help but reflect on how President Reagan might have reacted to Ms. Schiavos ordeal and to her parents repeated legal attempts to provide her with food and water. I have no doubt Reagan would have worked to combat the spread of euthanasia and doctor-assisted homicide by strongly backing legislation penalizing doctors and nurses who withdraw or withhold feeding and hydration from otherwise healthy patients.
Reagan did not promote the pro-life cause to pander to the conservative base of the Republican Party. He saw the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence as our Founders admonition that life is a right all people share because it is given by God, and that governments role is to secure and affirm that right, not exploit it...........

And the family wants to exercise a "right to kill" all in the name of dignity. Dehydration is very dignified, they must think.
A woman in a vegetative state is to be given a "miracle" sleeping pill said to have caused others in her condition to "wake up" after England's senior family court judge overruled the objections of her family in the first case of its kind.
The family of the 53-year-old woman, who has been diagnosed as in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) after a massive brain haemorrhage suffered on holiday in August 2003, want her to be allowed to die with dignity. They say she would not want to live with severe disabilities while being aware of her condition, a likely outcome if the drug, zolpidem, works.

Few news agencies are picking up on this travesty unfolding. So far, it is just the local TV. I notice they have declared Michael brain dead and they note he has a strong heart. We don't suppose, do we??? Parts? I wonder if he has some valuable and healthy parts available.
The parents are told it is a civil matter.
(CBS 3) CAMDEN Karen and Joe Kennedy want more time before taking their 16-year-old son Matthew Bollinger off life support at Cooper Hospital. Doctors declared him brain dead after the Oakcrest High school student failed two tests which determine his brain activity.
"I believe there's something still there. I've seen him move, you know, I've seen it, whether they say it's reflexes or not," said Karen Kennedy.
Joe Kennedy added, "We're talking 48 hours and they want to end his life. It's not right."

Meanwhile, the Kennedy's are getting support from other families who've gone through similar situations, and have also spoken with Camden County authorities who told them their case is a civil matter. They would, however, like to see a change in New Jersey state law regarding cases like theirs.
"The state's got the right to turn my baby down. I don't see where that's right. That's my baby, said Karen

It just goes on and on. Kill....kill.......kill - that's all they want to do. After passing judgment on the quality of someone's life, they want to go forward with the execution immediately.
My heart is sick.
Out, out, damn thought!

It gets tough to see over and over, but must have been happening more than we realize in the shadows. Shining the light on it may rescue a few and wake up some.
