WASHINGTON The Pentagon is looking into how classified information indicating Iraq is moving closer to chaos wound up on the front page of Wednesday's New York Times, and is not ruling out an investigation that could lead to criminal charges.
A spokesman for U.S. Central Command, which has responsibility for operations in Iraq, confirmed to FOX News that a chart published in The Times is a real reflection of the thinking of military intelligence on the situation in Iraq as of Oct. 18, adding that an effort is underway to find out who leaked the chart and if the breach of operational security constitutes a crime.
The published report includes a classified one-page slide show from an Oct. 18 military briefing. The slide show is titled: Iraq: Indications and Warnings of Civil Conflict, and shows spiraling violence in Iraq and a worsening position for American efforts.
Based on the slide show, Iraq is moving sharply away from "peace," designated in green on the left side of the chart, to a point much closer to the red-zoned right side of the spectrum, marked chaos.

I heard this story being touted on an ABC Radio newscast. It first made me furious (and still does) but the NYT and their liberal MSM bretheren still refuse to understand that this ILLEGAL leak just before the election will backfire.
Unauthorized dissemination of classified material? I think they already know the answer to that.
It is high time that an "anonymous Pentagon source" is made an example of.
This administration needs to "burn" a few of these leakers, set an example.
Tony Snow was even asked about this at the WH press briefing today...and he came armed with a report just like the one in this article...from a different week in the near past..
In THAT report...the situation was talked about totally different..and Tony was making the point that the situation on the ground is ever changing..and the one in today's paper was reflective of 2 weeks ago....which means nothing now.
And nail their soap to the shower floor...
Busting someone over this would be good about now...we're all in the mood for some avenging.
I want to see Pinch and Bill Keller as cellmates in the KEN LAY suite at some Federal SuoperMax prison.
New York Times appears to have doctored the slide referred to in this brilliantly well-timed bit of election propaganda by removing the classification markings which are invariably found at the top and bottom of these slide (even when they are unclassified and this one was classified, as Central Command has already confirmed). I want to know whether there is any level of national secret the Times is not willing to betray for the political advantage of its pet causes. And I would like to know what else they may have doctored on the slide.
And while we're at it, I would love to understand why the law doesn't prohibit the propagation of strategic national secrets in wartime which has always been understood as treason.

The story does state that:
"The chart does note some positive developments. Specifically, it notes that hostile rhetoric by political and religious leaders has not increased. It also notes that Iraqi security forces are refusing less often than in the past to take orders from the central government and that there has been a drop-off in mass desertions.
Dont you think its about damned time someone bit the dust for these leaks.
Thank God Rush asked W about this today. W dodged for obvious reasons. But it seems something will finally be done about these leaks. Personally, I'd prosecute the perps ASAP to the highest extent of the law. And give Fox's Soap Opera Queen the exclusive.
FROGMARCH Sulzberger!
What the hell is taking so damn long??
Like hanging him from a lightpole in front of the Time buildingand leaving him there to rot?
Just half of him...hang the other half at the Pentagon to remind a few folks around there of their oath.
Our President knows that putting a lid on leakers and the media who publish them are just as much a threat to this country as the terrorists. I predict we will see many people jailed in the coming 2 years.
