Patriotism became the dominant theme in the heated race for Republican Rep. John Doolittle's seat Wednesday, with fellow Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter trying to tie Doolittle's opponent to the controversy surrounding comments by Sen. John Kerry.
Democrat Charlie Brown, a retired Air Force officer and decorated war veteran, punched back by releasing a television ad accusing Doolittle of dodging the Vietnam War by attending college.
The ad also notes that his son, Jeff, is about to begin a fourth rotation in Iraq as an Air Force pilot.
During a news conference at the state Capitol, Hunter, R-San Diego, called on Kerry and Brown to apologize to U.S. troops for comments that he said were demoralizing and hurtful.
He released a 2 1/2-year-old e-mail in which Brown called Iraq "a war of occupation/aggression" and accused Brown of close ties to peace activist Cindy Sheehan.
"All the humanitarian things that our troops have done, who are America's best ambassadors, the idea that you call our troops' efforts an act of aggression and occupation is inexcusable," said Hunter, a Vietnam veteran who earlier this week announced he would run for president in 2008.
The battle over the war and patriotism was renewed on a national scale this week after the White House denounced Kerry for comments he made Monday in Pasadena. The 2004 Democratic presidential candidate told students that those who don't study hard and do their homework would likely "get stuck in Iraq."
Kerry apologized Wednesday, characterizing his statement as a botched joke.
Brown is a retired lieutenant colonel who spent 26 years in the Air Force and is making his first run for public office.
His challenge to Doolittle in a heavily Republican Northern California district has grown unexpectedly tight in a year Democrats hope to take control of the House.

I think it's amazing that I've been polled so often since the turn of the century. Maybe it's because I re-registered "Decline To State" as my Pary preference. I wonder...
I just listened to a KFBK radio interview on Brown. The screener made sure that questions that would challenge Brown were not taken as I was put on hold for a half hour. I should have lied about what my question would be. I should have said I wanted to thank him and that my vote had just changed for him...then they would have let me on.
As it was, they allowed him to spin his support for the guy who hung an effigy of our soldiers into "I was supporting his free speech rights". Give us a break!!
There are plenty of things you can say with free speech, but some of them are just plain stupid.
Charlie also sent an E-mail to all city employees where Charlie was an official stating that the Iraq war was a total war of aggression by the US, or some such leftwing garbage. Both acts by Charlie are way outside the acceptable behavior for anyone in the service, or in public elected service!!!
He's a clown... That Charlie Brown... Why is everybody always pickin on me??? (cause you're just as dumb as Kerry, idiot!)
The muddled moderate milk-toast they replaced Mark with just isn't even worth listening to. I listen to Rush and Tom Sullivan and usually listened to Mark from the time of the protests at the Capitol of Algore trying to steal the 2000 election from THE PRESIDENT, till they uncerimoniously dumped him for NO known reason other than they had too much conservatism on KFBK, or some such ROT!!!
Here in Placer County we've been invaded by San Francisco liberals who cashed in on their overpriced homes. We still have a Republican majority but I'm a little worried here. The Dems are spending a lot on Charlie Brown. You would think he was a conservative. I see all these "Republicans for Brown" signs everywhere. Brown is a left wing wacko and Dolittle better start doing a better job of getting this out.
I almost forgot. The fact that both the AP and the Wash Post are trying to give Charlie Brown a boost shows they must feel this race is close.
Isn't Laura Bush coming to Rocklin tomorrow to stump for Doolittle? I think she IS!!!
They're in a feeding frenzy because of the Abrimoff bull crappola. They've never been able to even get close to John ever before and the reason John isn't punching Charlie's lights out, other than in their pseudo debate, is because I think John enjoys chummin the waters and gittin their hopes up so they'll be twice as depressed when they lose yet still another time to the Congressman extrordinairre! Not perfect, just extrordinairre!!!
Yeah... Tom is both mining and minding somebody's millions. Not mine!!! I got a mind of my own, beins I'm in the same line of work he's in. (except for the radio show)
It was a surprise to me when I found out Mark Williams was gone. This new guy was pushing Charlie Brown and when I tried to get on the air, they stuck me on hold.
Next time, I lie to get on the air.
Can't believe KFBK has converted Mark William's show with it's "War Room," to a platform for Cindy Sheehan's best buddy, Charlie Brown and his anti-war room!!!
CA already has enough Brown Rot!!!
Hey, they try to poll all the couch potatoes ;o)
KFBK has gone socialist-wacko, so they had to get rid of Mark, since he is main-stream American (how terrible!)
Watchit buster!!! This "couch potato" has EYES!!! (How come you spell potato like Dan Quail???)(snort!!!)
