so now you are also telling me I have to look forward to "en masse" shootouts on the train, as everyone pulls their piece. how about hostage taking, is the perp going to grab a hostage too, to block the shots from all the witnesses who have drawn their weapons?
the US can't have uniform CCW laws, because it not a uniformly organized society - the law in Texas shouldn't be forced on NYC, and the law in NYC shouldn't be forced on Texas.
Both of you need to work on you homepages. Do eith of you live in NYC or a similiar big city (suburbs don't count)?
That is an absolutely brilliant point. Bloomberg is a total idiot.
I can't stand Michael Bloomberg.
I can't stand Ray Kelly.
And I can't stand Ray Kelly's kid, either.
You forget, Bloomie lives in Bizarro World.
I live in NYC.
yes, in fact I change cars all the time if I get a bad "vibe" from someone on my train.
I miss the red birds.
(sorry unrelated, but the new trains aren't really subways)
"if everyone were carrying a gun, there would be dozens of shootings per day just over these incidents."
Big deal. As long as they were justifiable.
Nope. You haven't been paying attention at all. I'm saying such incidents are going to decrease because the perps know that their chances of getting shot just went up exponentially.
If the risk of hotheads getting blown away over parking spaces and being bumped on the subway is so great, why aren't people in these situations getting stabbed all hte time right now. Like Wideawake, I ride the subway every day, and have for 20+ years. At all hours of the day. In that time, I have seen maybe a couple of fights. I was mugged on the subway once, but that was really a racial attack, motivated by Howard Beach. That's why I asked you were you live. You seem to be getting your ideas about the subway from TV and movies. It's not really like that.
I'm assuming that you don't live in a city.
You should try taking the subway once in a while. They've gotten a lot safer since Dinkins left office.
fine, those states that want it, let the people decide through their elected representatives. even the NRA doesn't want to make a constitutional issue of CCW.
Uh, you haven't been allowed to "change cars" on the subway for several years.
I take the subway all the time. But I still miss the red birds. And I particularly hate the new trains on the lex line.
Not everyone is as timid as you are.
Most New Yorkers refuse to be intimidated - which does not mean that they are hotheads.
If everyone reacted the way you do, then any two-bit hood could walk into a subway car at rush hour, act tough, and clear a car for his personal amusement and the enormous inconvenience of a few hundred fellow NYers.
I'll also point out that plenty of subway riders every day are already in possession of knives, wrenches, bike chains, etc. And, of course, unregistered firearms.
Could have fooled me. The redbirds are long gone, and the cars on the 4/5/6 line are hardly new.
there are too many dynamics in a large metropolitan area for broad CCW (home and business defense is a totally different story). too many people, too many interactions amongst them. its not like living in a place where you get into your own car in the morning, drive alone, park in your spot at work, then go home at night. most suburban americans come into contact with very few "strangers" in their daily routines, think about it. think about how different that is in a city like NYC.
You are incredibly wrong. I've visited large cities around the world and have had few problems, but I'm alert, aware of my surroundings and avoid problems.
In gunless London (UK) I had two incidents where I wish I had more than my illegal knife. I guess the hoodlums are used to sheep there. In one case a man with a carribean accent rifled through my wife's purse while sitting next to us at a fish and chip joint. He was absolutely scared sh!tless, when I jumped up and threatened to cut him if he didn't leave immediately. He swiftly left, the rest of the diners applauded the brave American. Frankly, the last thing in the world I want is to be in a knife fight. I was also informed by the locals that if the pickpocket informed the police I could be arrested.
The second time, a vagrant decided to start screaming obscenities into my face at a bus stop. We beat a hasty retreat.
Believe me, in cities where citizens are armed, the lowlifes are not nearly as bold.
The new lex line trains are only a few years old. The red birds are the trains I grew up with and still mourn their passing.
