Row over Australian Muslims intensifies

A bitter row over the attitude among Muslims towards women in Australia intensified today when a senior Islamic cleric complained that Muslim men convicted of rape received much heavier penalties than white offenders.
Sheik Mohammed Omran said Muslims found guilty of rape were dealt with more harshly than other sex offenders such as members of motorcycle gangs or “football stars”.
He appeared to be referring to the gang rape of several white Australian girls by a group of young Muslim men in 2000.
One of the men, the ringleader Bilal Skaf, received a 55-year jail term - the longest sentence for rape ever handed down in Australia. It was later reduced on appeal.
The gang rapes sparked public outrage. The offenders, mostly of Lebanese background, preyed on white teenage women, calling them “Aussie pigs” and telling them they would be raped “Leb-style”.
One 18-year-old victim was raped by 14 different men during a six-hour ordeal, while another was stripped, staked out on the ground and surrounded by men who “behaved much like wild animals treat prey they have just killed,” in the words of a judge.
“They make a big fuss about these kids because one of them, his name is Mohamed,” said Sheikh Omran, from Melbourne, in a sermon. “Even if you kill someone, you don’t go for 60 years.”
Muslim attitudes towards women are under intense scrutiny after Australia most prominent Muslim cleric described immodestly dressed women as “uncovered meat” who invited rape.
Sheikh Taj Aldin al-Hilali, 65, collapsed while waiting to meet a delegation of Muslim leaders to discuss his future on Monday. He remains in hospital today.
He said he was seeking “indefinite leave” from his duties at Lakemba mosque in Sydney. Senior Muslims insisted, however, that he had not been sacked and would not resign.
The Egyptian-born cleric has a history of heart trouble and asthma.
The prime minister, John Howard, called for Australia’s 300,000-strong Muslims to distance themselves from the Sheikh Hilali’s inflammatory remarks. Many young Muslims have condemned his outburst and others want to see him replaced by a national board of imams.

55 years sounds about right to me.
If they had done this in the US the Aussie Pigs comment might get them a Hate Crime charge added.
Fundamentalist Muslims won't thrive in a free society, they will only be marginal shadows. The children however will rebel and join those breathing the air of Western ideas and freedom.....or else they'll end up in therapy for the rest of their lives delaing with sexual/emotional issues.
Hey Omran, thanks for your sincere concern for the safety of the women of Australia, not to mention female tourists. It's gratifying that your concern about sexual predators being punished harshly across the board rather than playing the tired old "Muslim men are the real victims and it's not fair" game.

If it was the Rape Sheik's daughter who had been gang-raped, he would demand nothing less than death for the perps. And then he would kill his daughter for bringing shame on the family.

Nope. Thet turn into tomorrows killers, ticking time bombs waiting to go off. But oh how nice and pleasant they are until that days comes... Islam breeds nothing but violence. If you want to start making an attempt at stopping this, then we have to do what Turkey does, monitor and control every single sermon preached in the mosks. It doesn't stop Islamic violence, but slows it down, drives it underground. Ban the Koran and burn every mosk is the better solution, and the one the world must take when it decides enough is enough. Otherwise, this Islamic uprizing, the rise of the persian empire the bible speaks of in end times, is the beginning of the end for this world.
Or maybe the poor sots would have accidentally got in the way of a Texas Long Horn stampede.
