Michael Barone: The obvious meaning of his words was something that was derogatory about the character and quality of the troops, and inaccurately derogatory.
Brit: [Kerry] did call it a botched joke about the Bush admministration.
Fred: What was the joke?
Brit: Well, there was a ripple of laughter in the audience after he made the comment about, you know, if you don't do your homework and you're not smart, you get stuck in Iraq.
Fred: If it was a botched joke, then what did he mean to say? [snip] The words are pretty plain.
