Third word: The Who Sell Out. It may be their most underrated album.

I agree. Sell Out is a fantastic pop album. The flat-out rock of I Can See for Miles, the acoustic beauty of Sunrise, the musical themes in Rael that would later be fully realized in Tommy. I was telling my son just the other day that Sell Out is their most underappreciated, Who's Next is their "greatest," and Quadrophenia is their "best"--in fact, I'd stack Quad up against anything else out there as the best rock and roll album of all time.

For something really strange, but to me quite amazing, check out Petra Haden's one-woman a capella version of The Who Sell Out. I Can See For Miles is just incredible. She's touring the county now with her group, The Sell-Outs. Townshend, by the way, called the effort "exquisite", though Roger reportedly didn't like it.
