Yes, very sad. These sisters were the epitome of God-fearing puritan women. Mary went to Gallows Hill with forgiveness for her accusers and with a serenity that only the deepest faith in God can instill. Her older sister, Rebecca, was excommunicated from the church that she so loved before she was hanged. That was the cruelest hurt of all. She died believing that the church had the power to sever her connection with God. Several years after her hanging, the church reversed the excommunication and the British government awarded Sarah three gold sovereigns for the injustice done to her and her two sisters.
