Bush hits hard at gay marriage
By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer 13 minutes ago
President Bush has for months cast the midterm elections as a choice about just two issues: taxes and terrorism. Now, with polls predicting bleak results for Republicans, he is trying to fire up his party by decrying gay marriage.
"For decades, activist judges have tried to redefine America by court order," Bush said Monday. "Just this last week in New Jersey, another activist court issued a ruling that raises doubt about the institution of marriage. We believe marriage is a union between a man and a woman, and should be defended."
The line earned Bush by far his most sustained applause at a rally of 5,000 people aimed at boosting former GOP Rep. Max Burns (news, bio, voting record)' effort to unseat a Democratic incumbent. In this conservative rural corner of eastern Georgia, even children jumped to their feet alongside their parents to cheer and clap for nearly 30 seconds a near-eternity in political speechmaking.
The New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples must be given all the benefits of married couples, leaving it up to the state Legislature to decide whether to extend those rights under the structure of marriage or something else.
One alternative, civil unions, is an idea Bush supports. But he ignored that on the way to portraying the New Jersey decision as the kind of thing America should do without.
"I believe I should continue to appoint judges who strictly interpret the law and not legislate from the bench," the president said, earning more applause in the sweltering basketball arena at Georgia Southern University. He pointed to his nominations to the Supreme Court of Chief Justice John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

Good.
I plan on voting and I will be voting Republican here in Kansas, but I have to say that what Bush is doing is disgusting. When Bush is in trouble he calls on us to support him by campaigning on values that mean so much to us, but once its time to perform its back to the same crap. I have a great GOP Congressman in my district who is a Conservative and two great GOP Senators and I hope they will not have to suffer by the acts of all these Rinos.
Have you not gotten 2 conservative Supreme Court judges and many, many conservative federal judges? And the Senate tried to pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage but without 2/3rds support in the Senate an amendment can't pass. That's not Bush or the GOP's vault. We need more GOP Senators!
Anyway, I'm not sure what you think you're not getting in terms of the social agenda.
"They're not different. The end result is the same."
What I don't understand is why the percentage of Americans (Bush included apperantly) who support civil unions is so much higher than those who support gay marriage. Its the same damn thing!
Are these Judges really that Conservative. Look at Alito's first case on the Supreme Court, he sided with the Liberals. All I've seen is the coverup of corruption and a Pediphile, along with out of control spending.

I've heard Bush speak a number of times on marriage. He has said he supports a marriage amendment, and also said that states should be able to define arrangements other than marriage. I think because he supports rights of states to define other arrangements, some think he wants civil unions that are identical to marriage in all but name. Not sure that's really true.
Come here to Massachusetts, then. We have zero Republicans in Congress; all Republicans at the state level are RINOs... We have Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank, and Clinton won here in 2006 with 65% of the vote. We have court imposed gay marriage, and the State house refuses to let us vote on it.
The Senate leadership (Frist) has been very undisciplined.
Without McCain, the McCain gang won't fight. Pressure was never brought on McCain to toe the line, so we find ourselves in a mess.
Also conservatives need to get back to smaller, less intrusive government and further welfare reform. If it weren't for income taxes and the government caring how much to take and from whom we wouldn't be in this mess.
If a church will marry you, then fine. Just accept that not everyone has to recognize it. Get government out of peoples lives.
Like I said I will vote Republican on Election Day, because I have decent Elected officials, but if I lived in some of the other areas of this country I would be ashamed to vote Republican. I cant vent anywhere else, so I will just do it here.
Thats why I'm glad I live in Kansas.
Lets step away from Bush for a second. Again what is the difference between a marriage and a civil union that doesn't confer the name but gives 'em everything else?
I heard Bush stumping for a congressman somewhere yesterday. He started bragging about how tough he had been on illegal immigration and border security. I couldn't believe this. We all know what his position is and I'm sure his audience did too. It was difficult to watch.
