Former Prince George's County executive Wayne K. Curry, backed by five black members of the Prince George's County Council, today endorsed Republican Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele's campaign for the U.S. Senate, at a 12:45 p.m. press conference. Mr. Curry, a Democrat who became the first black Prince George's county executive in 1994, and served two terms, is influential in Prince George's, the state's second-largest county, with about 846,000 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Council members David Harrington, Camille Exum, Samuel H. Dean, Marilynn M. Bland and Tony Knotts joined Mr. Curry in backing Mr. Steele, who is black. Prince George's is also 65 percent black, and is expected to play a key role in Maryland's Nov. 7 U.S. Senate race between Mr. Steele, who is from Prince George's, and Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, who is white and from Baltimore

No, this proves the Dem party are a bunch of racists who use blacks but want them kept on the plantation or in the back of the bus. Hopefully, most blacks are starting to see through this.

There is some black civil rights guy who usually comes on Sean's program and ends up throwing a gasket. He got up and left one time. Anyway, I think he has a running bet with Sean about doing something if the Republicans ever get a black elected to a national office. Well, I think he is about to lose that bet.

this is historic stuff. Blacks in MD actually using their vote to swing an election. If even 10% of black voters defect its a 20% swing in the black vote. This isn't just a stay home strategy, it actually effects turnout on both sides. Now these guys got to bring it home. If that happens blacks in MD will have a true political voice in the republican party and its will start a snowball for '08.
Believe it. For this to happen in the face of all the "dems are gonna win" media hype, it shows that traditional democratic voters are are ready to abandon the pacifist party because it no longer represents their patriotic views. No way blacks would abandon dems in the face of a democratic ground swell on Nov. 7th. I'm starting to smell some roses here.

Yeah, well...good news, but then Cardin is boring and a knee-jerk lefty all at the same time. And IMO, Steele has done his own bit of pandering. The general excuses will no doubt follow. Yes, I am voting for him and Ehrlich but I am not happy about it and in truth, I am voting against O'Malley and Cardin and every other democrat. Man of Steele...right.

Nope, Prince George's County is only 65% Black per the census as of 2004.

Remember the University of Maryland campus is in the county, Bowie is in the county and mostly white, and towns like Greenbelt have a lot of white people.

Seriously, if the Dems had enough brains they would have made sure Curry was their nominee - he would be beating Steele like a drum by now. But this just proves that the Maryland Democratic Party is still a Baltimore mob. Ben Cardin was their handpicked guy and they have blown it. PG County is tired of being treated like a baldheaded stepchild.

I'm not familiar with MD politics. What is Curry like compared to Cardin re: WOT and islam? Infume must also be turned off, his kid is supporting Steel. Is this defection due to local issues or due to national pacifist party too liberal for Patriotic black Americans, issues?

This statement moves the issue to the national stage, not just some local guy trying to get his. i wonder if this is a reference to the MJ Fox ads that were so brilliantly countered by Mr. Steel's articulate sister. That gets my vote for the most effective campaign ad since the Swift Vets in '04.

Yes, a lot of Steele signs, which are, at least in the Allentown Road area of PG county, torn down as quick as they are erected (up in the evening and down the next morning). And the Ehrlich signs have a life span of 2-3 days.

I am in Maryland - I think this endorsement comes because the democratic party is MD has taken african-americans for granted. The first black candidate for statewide office was Michael Steele - a republican. There is lingering resentment that the party was pretty open in favoring Cardin over Mfume.

I think this is smart move by Curry to take the Dems to the woodshed and be in a position to say - if you want us back, what's in it for us.

Just my take

Maryland Democratic Party is still a Baltimore mob.

Not really. It's more like a white guy's club though. (It would have been Mont. Co. head Duncan instead of O'Malley as Gov. candidateif he hadnt had health problems) You'd never see a high profile Democrat Black candidate at the top of the ticket anywhere in the State.

I'm not familiar with MD politics. What is Curry like compared to Cardin

Curry is from PG, former County Exec., and he'd be in better shape in the Party if he was white, like Glendenning was.

Black Democrats have had their fill of being treated like crap. Mfume hated Cardin but didnt have the cojones to endorse Steele. Curry does, aparently.

Dear 7thson,

"I think it is closer to 85-90 percent."

The school system is about 90% black, but the county's population is about 65% or thereabouts.

Ummm, where do you think Glendening was from? IMO, it has less to do with geography and more to do with race. Dont forget, PG County is majority Black. Can you name the last Black Democrat Governor or Senator? How bout never? Even the Baltimore Mayor is white, and the city is 2 thirds Black!

Some "activist" loser was on Hannity's program months ago saying he would quit the practice of law if a black Republican won a governor or Senate race this cycle.

<Anyone know who that was?

Bush and Cheney are going to MT, separately, this week. I think MT is still a good possibility.

We've all been focusing on what we believe will be the effect of Curry's endorsement of Mr. Steele.

I think that maybe we're getting things backward.

Mr. Curry is a very bright man. Although I didn't vote for him, he did a pretty passable job as County Executive for eight years (or maybe he just really looked really good after eight years of Mr. Glendenning). Mr. Curry is wealthy, has many, many connections, and has political ambitions for the future.

But you gotta ask the question, what now happens to Mr. Curry's future in politics?

I'm not sure myself. I have a hard time believing that the Maryland Dems will either forgive or forget. I don't know that Mr. Curry would run as a Republican.

However, what I DO know is that if Mr. Steele loses, Mr. Curry likely hasn't any future at all in politics. He will be disdained by the Dems as a traitor, and a loser of a traitor at that, and he will be ignored by Republicans as someone who can't deliver.

Which leads to another question - what does Mr. Curry know that isn't general knowledge? Would he go out on a limb if he thought it would be sawed off behind him?

A strng black vote for Steele might help Ehrlich. It is easier to vote a straight ticket than to split your ballot.

Unless the ballots are going to be different this election, here in Maryland, we have to vote for each individual.

Dear RobFromGa,

"I agree, the Rats are jumping on board because they are convinced he will win."

Maybe. I don't care much about the opinions of most Dems. In Maryland, to get elected as a Dem, you don't need much more than a room temperature IQ. The current Prince George's County Executive is proof of this. I know bunches of folks who know County Exec Jack Johnson. They are all unanimously of the opinion that he's dumber than roadkill. Even his friends. LOL.

But he'll get elected to a second term (after getting quite a scare from an unheard of candidate who received a last minute endorsement from Mr. Curry, and who'd been running behind by 15% prior to that).

But Mr. Curry's a real player. He's sharp. He's on the ball. He's a very successful businessman, real estate investor, banker, and attorney. He's got all kinds of connections. He knows everyone, and gets along with most. He's the real deal, the whole package.

It is utterly shocking that he would endorse Mr. Steele. And one must ask the question, what is his game? If one comes to the conclusion that he believes that Mr. Steele will win, then I gotta tell ya', I hear the fat lady warming up.
