Former Prince George's County executive Wayne K. Curry, backed by five black members of the Prince George's County Council, today endorsed Republican Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele's campaign for the U.S. Senate, at a 12:45 p.m. press conference. Mr. Curry, a Democrat who became the first black Prince George's county executive in 1994, and served two terms, is influential in Prince George's, the state's second-largest county, with about 846,000 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Council members David Harrington, Camille Exum, Samuel H. Dean, Marilynn M. Bland and Tony Knotts joined Mr. Curry in backing Mr. Steele, who is black. Prince George's is also 65 percent black, and is expected to play a key role in Maryland's Nov. 7 U.S. Senate race between Mr. Steele, who is from Prince George's, and Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, who is white and from Baltimore

Democrat turf war breaks out! This is Wayne Curry and PG County telling the Baltimore Machine, "I will not be ignored."

Hope it goes like that. I'd like to not have to volunteer past the 7th. LOL

Steele was so impressive in the debate, and Cardin was not impressive. I cannot imagine why anyone would vote for him. Oh, forgot its is the People's Republic of Maryland. However, Steele is on a roll.

Waiting until the last week and then jumping on the bandwagon is probably a better indication of how things are going than any poll.

I am hoping for 35-40% given it is an off year election and some southern Maryland whites may not vote for MR. Steele due to his race. Never hurts to be overly enthusiastic about his chances.

My mom's family is from PG county, and every last one of them is a die-hard democrat. Additionally, all of them are incidentally the biggest racists I've ever seen--they come from a farming background and they have been there several generations. So I'm not sure this will be as big a factor as you think, given that most of the southern MD white racists are democrats anyway.

Camille Exum is the Daughter of Senator Exum who really doesn't like Steele. That is pretty interesting to me. The County Council Blacks in PG must smell something in the wind

Is it too late for the Dems to dump Cardin?

Dear Towsoncrs,

"Ehrlich only got 13% of the Black vote last time."

I think that's what he's currently getting.

After the 2002 election, the number I saw was 22%. However, a quick google reveals news articles claiming anywhere from 14% and up.

I guess even after the fact, folks can't determine even approximately what actually happened.

In any event, I agree, 30% would seal Mr. Steele's election.

Good point. Curry must know which way the wind is blowing among his constituents. He would not stick his neck out for Steele if he didn't think Steele would win. I think the polls are grossly underestimating the black support for Steele.

Huge defection from the Democratic camp. When you see a public defection like this a week before an election, the writing is on the wall.

And darn it, it's good to see a good American benefit from it. And why not make a statement and send him $10 just to let him know.

Go Steele!

Maryland coming in for a GOP gain. We will hold VA, MO, and TN. Montana too close to call. We will take either Michigan or New Jersey, as well, possibly both.

Rhode Island is gone -- which is actually good news; DeWine in Ohio probably toast too.

I'm not convinced that Santorum is done.

I can't. I sent him 50 bucks last week from Ohio.

If Steele gets 40% of the black vote, he won't be 'pushed over the top', he'll be on top of a gigantic landslide.

Not if he moves to New Jersey.
