OLYMPIAOn October 27, the Evergreen Freedom Foundation (EFF) released a report of union political contributions in Washington in 2005. The report details union political spending by party, by individual recipients, and by donations to Political Action Committees.
Unlike political parties, which must rely on voluntary contributions, unions often use mandatory dues for political activity.
The issue is not that union spending does not precisely mirror its members views, but that unions often spend mandatory union dues on political activities, said Victor Joecks a policy analyst for EFFs Labor Policy Center. If mechanisms were in place to ensure that all contributions were voluntary, then every workers right of association would be protected.
The study found that although union members are politically diverse, union political contributions overwhelmingly favored Democratic and liberal politicians and causes. Over 95 percent union contributions went to Democratic candidates (excluding non-partisan races).
