The year was 1998: Rep. Jim Martin (D-Atlanta) was Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Gun owners were stunned when the SB 407 "Lock Away Your Gun" bill by Sen. David Scott (D-Atlanta) suddenly passed the State Senate. When it got to the House, it landed in Mr. Martin's committee.
Pro-gun leader Rep. Brian Joyce (R-Lookout Mtn.) rallied widespread opposition to the bill. Mr. Martin staged a "dog and pony show" for the TV cameras, with no gain on the play. The calendar was running out. The committee had to vote.
Mr. Martin gave virtually no public notice of the showdown meeting, but tipped anti-gunners who packed the room. Gun rights activists elbowed their way in. Mr. Martin stalled the vote, and tried for another appeal by Sen. Scott, but committee member Rep. Roy Barnes (D-Mableton) got mad--they'd had enough. Mr. Martin pulled the bill to save face, and it died.
Democratic candidate for Lt. Gov. Jim Martin voted anti-gun regularly when he was a state Rep. Having him a heartbeat away from the Governor's office is scary.
Sen. Casey Cagle (R-Gainesville) is the Republican candidate for Lt. Gov. He has a solid pro-gun record and is endorsed by Gun Owners of America.
