Schwarzenegger: Reinvented leader shows new humility
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | October 29, 2006 | Mark Martin, Tom Chorneau

Early this spring, after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had unveiled his proposal for a $68 billion state spending spree on roads, schools and prisons, Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez visited Schwarzenegger in the governor's Capitol office with a counter-proposal.

The list of projects was far different than what Schwarzenegger had proposed -- Democrats had taken out prison projects, increased spending on community colleges and added funding for public transportation -- and it carried a much smaller price tag.

Schwarzenegger looked over the list for a few minutes and then set it down.

I can live with this, he told Núñez. But can we go higher?

Weeks later, the governor and lawmakers announced they had a deal on a $37 billion spending proposal that had largely come about because it was clear to both Republican and Democratic lawmakers that Schwarzenegger wasn't very concerned about the details. The deal was struck between lawmakers and without the governor. They knew he would sign off on just about anything.

That bipartisan agreement marked a turning point in Schwarzenegger's road to recovery . . . A governor who two years earlier had urged Californians to tear up the state's credit card by voting for a spending limit had ushered in the biggest spate of borrowing in state history. A governor who has always demanded action, and who last year declared war on nearly everyone in Sacramento, had deftly figured out how to begin wiping away that bad memory by standing aside and letting a group he had once derided as "girlie men'' lead the way.

. . . Defining himself as exactly what the majority of Californians are -- "fiscally conservative, socially moderate and environmentally progressive,'' is how he put it recently -- Schwarzenegger may have one underlying core value: coming out on top.

Let's keep the fool we got.

We know nothing good about the new pretender to the throne...nothing that we like.

Compared to the governor we will undoubtedly be stuck with for another 4 years in AZ, CA is a very fortunate place in having Arnold. I hope he wins this one in another landslide and brings a few others along with him, like McClintock.

Of course, if Babs Boxer or Nancy "Botox" Pelosi showed "new humility" they paper would not only report it but in an approving way.

"Let's keep the fool we got."

We undoubtedly will! And we undoubtedly will continue to be fooled by the fool we got and meanwhile... Things involving meat & potato public policy matters will continue to become more and more screwed up for the next 48 long months!!!

I see little difference between the two, frankly. One just sports an "R" and that's it!!!

If that's all, why vote then? (Of course that's not "all" but your absence of personal honesty and your irrational hatred of republicans have you lying to yourself and any others who might listen to this prattle that pretends to be honest disagreement. No time for details eh? Just drastic change for change sake?

Lets just see what sane adults will do in this election.

Do you honestly believe people are that stupid?
