(MONONGAHELA, October 29) -- Washington County Commissioner and Pennsylvania 12th district Republican Congressional nominee Diana Irey -- responding to Jack Murtha's refusal to meet with her to debate the issues, despite newspaper editorials urging him to debate, a League of Women Voters offer to host and sponsor a debate, and local television stations' offer to air the debate - today released this statement:
"Last week, we began our 21-part series, 'Why doesn't Jack want to debate?' wherein I suggest 21 reasons Jack Murtha might be refusing to debate me in public.
"Today I offer reason number 8 Jack Murtha is scared to debate me: because HE DOESN'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW THAT CONTRARY TO WHAT HE SAYS NOW ABOUT HIS ROLE IN ABSCAM, HE DIDN'T JUST SAY 'NO' TO A $50,000 CASH BRIBE.
"In this morning's Herald-Standard, Jack Murtha once again repeats his false statement. Regarding an FBI undercover sting operation where an FBI agent offered him $50,000 for help in getting a rich foreigner into America, Congressman Murtha says 'It is clear I told the agent no.'
"But the truth is somewhat different. Here's another part of what he said on that tape:
"At this point, you know, we do business together for a while. Maybe I'll be interested and maybe I won't … Now, I won't say that some day, you know, I, if you made an offer, it may be I would change my mind some day."
"Where I come from, you say 'no' by saying 'no.' You don't say 'no' by saying 'we do business together for a while … I won't say that some day, you know, I, if you made an offer, it may be I would change my mind some day.'
"By the way, Jack Murtha also is reported in this morning's Herald-Standard to have denied that he was a co-conspirator in Abscam. That is, quite simply, yet another falsehood. And it is not I who have labeled him a co-conspirator in Abscam -- it was the Department of Justice, in 1980, which labeled him an unindicted co-conspirator. Look it up."

It's very simple why Jackoff Murtha won't debate. He's up by double digits. Thus, no need for him to debate Irey. His constituents must be comprised of left wing nut jobs like himself which explains why they still support him.
Exactly, he was on FACE THE NATION this morning and couldn't actually answer Schieffer's questions, he just reverted to memorized canned spiels that are his stock in trade and Schieffer soft pedaled it.
I believe that is partly true but many of his constituents are patriotic moderate to conservative Dems that I don't believe he wants to be grilled in front of by Diana Irey.
Don't get me wrong, I would like nothing more than to see Murtha lose, but he's an incumbent and I am not sure how well Irey is running her campaign to point out just how wrong Murtha is.

You make a good point and I guess it's difficult to decide the approach to take with a 32 year incumbent.
I'm in no way privy to the campaign strategy but personally believe this approach stemmed from his criticism of the WOT, the criticism of the condition of our military in general and the criticism of the Haditha Marines. The district is composed of about 18% military families and veterans.

well, he doesn't really have to debate her if he's so far ahead.
Were he far ahead, he'd happily debate her.
Unfortunately, that's not the way it works. When you're that far ahead, debating can ONLY hurt you, not help.
