'Free Saddam or else...' 29/10/2006 17:19 - (SA)

Amman - Saddam Hussein's defence team has drafted a letter to US President George W Bush warning of dire consequences if an Iraqi court issues a verdict against the ousted Iraqi president for crimes against humanity.

In a copy of the letter received by AFP in Jordan on Sunday, lead Iraqi lawyer Khalil al-Dulaimi also urged Bush to set free Saddam and put an end to the trial which he described again as illegal and a farce.

"We believe that it is necessary to stop this farcical trial and set free President Saddam Hussein, and all the prisoners, because this is the only solution for your troops and your difficult position in Iraq," Dulaimi said.

"This is also the best way for the future of Iraq, the region and the world," he added.

He warned that a verdict by the Iraqi High Tribunal against Saddam and seven co-defendants over the killing of 148 Shi'ite villagers in the Iraqi village of Dujail could plunge Iraq and the region into violence. The villagers were executed after a 1982 attempt to kill Saddam.

"This decision will set ablaze anew the country and plunge the entire region into the unknown...," he said.

The Iraqi lawyer, who heads the Amman-based defence team, said the verdict due by the court was timed to coincide with US Congressional elections.

"There is an unfair decision that has already been taken by the court to eliminate President Saddam Hussein in time with the US Congressional elections, through which the US administration seeks to safeguard its position," he said.

Dulaimi also told Bush: "You will risk your troops who have lost control over Iraq and you will place in danger your interests and the security of the region."

This entire trial of Saddam Hussein has long since become nothing but a ridiculously unfunny joke.

That it's been drawn out this long only gives everyone involved the distinct impression that our side is a bunch of ass-grabbing idiots who couldn't pour p!$$ out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel.

We have risked enough allowing them to drag out the show trial of a guilty man. They just need to get it over with and right before the election is a wonderful time in my estimation. lol
The heads on Dems around the country would spin like they are possessed if the judgment is handed down on the 6th as planned. I think they also need to take out Al Sadr, I don't care how they do it. Pay a militia for all I care but that guy is one key reason for the on going mess. I think they should also pay $500 us dollars a head for proven foreign terrorists, an extra $500 if they have a Cnn presspass.

I actually took a couple of my permanent bumper stickers off due to what you warned about.

Twice, I had an old left wing hag stop her car behind my Bronco after I started to back up. The second time I had a disposable camera and took pictures of how she deliberately parked behind me in a blind spot. When she saw I was taking pictures, she drove off and gave the finger. The only thing that saved her was her age and she was driving a disabled driver vehicle. There were some other unpleasant events.

In case the lawyer hasn't noticed, President Bush does not respond well to threats like this.

Is Ramsey Clark still involved?

If so, that would explain it.

'Free Saddam or else...'

Or else? Or else, what? Can we perceive that as a thread and respond accordingly? Please?

Remember, Saddam's defense team includes Ramsey Clark. You remember him, the Gooberment officiali on stage at the 1971 DC anti-Vietnam War Protest with Sen Moby Dork Kennedy, Jane Fondue, and Bennidict Kerry.

He's got a point, we need to maintain the pristine and peaceful atmosphere of the M.E.

After all, the tourism trade may suffer.

They would be fine as long as they weren't toting panties with an agenda at the time. ; )

How much anyone willing to bet that Saddam is never executed, or even perhaps the trial gets thrown out and he eventually returns to power?

Stranger things have happened.

From a January 2001 article

'President Saddam Hussein might defend his autocratic style of leadership by arguing that nothing else could have kept such a vast and diverse nation united.

And, for all that Saddam Hussein is criticised and reviled, his opponents have not been able to nominate anyone else who might hold Iraq together - with its Kurds in the north, Sunni Muslims in the centre and Shi'ia in the south. What the outside world calls terror, Saddam calls expediency'
