"I wonder what red is going to say now to Len Bias on that big parquet court in the sky."
Len, you effed up. You could have played with Bird, Parrish, McHale, Johnson, etc...it might have been the best team in history. But, you are forgiven.
RIP Red and Len.
Scary.
It was so close to happening.
Thinking 70 wins, with Ainge running the backcourt for most of the second half.
What is it with Boston and terminal Near-Greatness?
I just sit here on the West Coast with envy.
Truly a sports legend...he will be missed
Red Auerbach last night had a vision..in it, he saw wilt chamberlain..so he had to ask, "wilt, tell me, is there basketball in heaven?"...wilt said, "red, you betcha, 300 teams"...red said, "that's great"..wilt replied, "well red, there's good news and bad news..the good news is, the finals are tied at 3 games apiece and I'm the starting center..the bad news is, you're coaching us in game 7"..
RIP Red..the game lost a good one..
RIP
"I just sit here on the West Coast with envy."
You could watch West, Chamberlain, Goodrich, Hairston, McMillen, Magic, Alcindar, Cooper, Worthy, Rambis, etc...
I sit here on the East Coast with envy.
I'd do a Howie Carr ping but maybe I'll just mention it on Monday's ping...and (morbid to say this) sad to say I think
he was in the most recent HC death pool...
Anyway, he's with Johnny Most now, high above courtside.
Good night, Red.
As a Lakers fan, I enjoyed hating you and your great teams in the 1980s, but you were never anything but class. And so were those teams.
Yeah, but the Lakers Of Now are just a merchandising machine - not an orchestrated team of greatness.
In fact, the NBA Old School only exists in weird places like Miami and Dallas.
Red's boots are, in this day and age, going to be impossible to fill, FRiend.
Rest in peace.
Oh, you forgot Walton, but he played on both coasts. Nevermind.
"In fact, the NBA Old School only exists in weird places like Miami and Dallas."
And in the memories of people like me. I stopped watching the NBA shorty after Magic and Bird retired.
(How could I forget Elgin Baylor?)
Never thought much of Walton as a Pro.
Ditto. On those rare occasions when I come across a game on TV nowadays, I am always convinced that the Lakers or Celtics from the 1980s would mop the floor with whatever team I am watching.
