Thanks for posting this piece.
fyi,
There are at least a couple of orgs to which the centrist and moderate Republican members belong including but not limited to:
The Republican Main Street Partnership
http://www.republicanmainstreet.org/
The Republican Main Street Partnership was founded in 1998 to promote thoughtful leadership in the Republican Party, and to partner with individuals, organizations and institutions that share centrist values.
The Partnership is comprised of party members and public officials who are fiscally conservative deficit hawks. The Partnership is working to Grow Our Party through a pragmatic approach to governing that reaches out to a broad base of Americans who share the Republican ideals of fiscal responsibility and limited government. The Partnership contributes to the nation's governance through developing and promoting creative public policies for implementation at appropriate levels of government.

A Christie Whitman creation

About Us
Inspired by a drive to get back to the fundamentals of the Republican Party, Governor Christie Whitman created the political organization It's My Party Too, which advocates for the historic Republican principles of liberty, individual responsibility, and personal freedom.
IMP-PAC's vision is a Republican Party that is unified by the basic tenets of fiscal responsibility and personal freedom, but that allows for diverse opinions on social issues by its members.
IMP-PAC members consider themselves True Conservative Republicans. Republicans who believe that our elected officials have a responsibility to their constituents to spend their money wisely. We believe that government should have a limited role in Americans personal lives. And we believe in a strong national defense.
It's My Party Too PAC or IMP-PAC is a political action committee dedicated to supporting fiscally conservative, socially inclusive Republican candidates at all levels of government. Governor Whitman also created a 527 to advance the issues that help define Real Conservative members of the Republican Party.
IMP-PAC is NOT defined by one issue. We believe, as you can see through our diverse Advisory Board Members, that people who believe in the core Republican values can find common ground on social issues.
No, Susie Q, that is very much the reward you deserve.
With stupid stories like this, no wonder this paper is not even fit for the use of cleaning my fish.
If the Senate splits 50-50, you know exactly what Chafee will do.
"There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil."

Fortunately, in just that scenario, Dick Chaney casts the deciding vote!
But I understand what you mean give or take one vote.
You're right. We can't rule that out. I believe Chaffee (in the past) has indicated he might do a party switch.
I think it sucks. I also wish Steve Laffey had won the primary over Chaffee.
As it stands, the GOP will no longer have to worry about Chaffee soon. Most polls have him losing to the Democrat, Sheldon Whitehouse.
If you are a moderate, your head is in the sand, pull it out and contend for truth.
And that is with support from the RNC for him over his primary opponent.
But the RNC made a bet they couldn't win with a conservative there.
I wish Laffey had won too, but there just aren't enough Republicans up there. Of course, we can prevent a split by voting for every Republican we can, and I will, for everything except governor.
The RNC and the RSCC have always had a rule: In the event of a primary, always stand with the incumbent.
I'm not surprised they did so.
Truth be told, I'm not sure that Laffey could have won the general election. In a battle for an open seat, I'd give him a chance. But this is Rhode Island where EVERYONE is liberal.
As much as I try to think in terms of a big GOP tent, losing Chaffee wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen.
Any money spent by the RNC on Chafee could have been spent elsewhere far more productively. If the Senate outside that seat is anything other than 50 Democrats and 49 Republicans, it won't matter whether the seat is occupied by Chafee or someone honest enough to call herself a Democrat. And if the Senate outside the seat is 50-49 Democrat, the Republicans won't have a majority regardless of whether Chafee or the Democrat is elected. So why spend any money on Chafee?
Not voting for Crist ?
Not unless I change my mind in the next 10 days.
I don't disagree.
But in the collegial clubhouse they call the Senate, incumbent protection is #1 priority.
I hope all the money they spent trying to save Chaffee doesn't prevent us from electing other more conservative GOP senators.
The only thing they don't dare call themselves is Democrats, which is what they are.
Where are the stories in the New York Times about Moderate Democrats Feeling Like Endangered Species? It's probably more abundent and relevent.
