David Letterman rips into Bill O'reilly

Friday night's "Late Show" with David Letterman in New York will mostly consist of an insult fest between Letterman and Fox's Bill O'Reilly, a report says. The New York Post's Page Six previewed a tape of the CBS show, saying that everything starts going downhill right when O'Reilly sits down and offers letterman a plastic sword, holds up a plastic shield and jokes about doing battle. Letterman responds to that with. "Oh, that's nice, that's cute, you come out with toys ... Am I right about one thing: You guys over there at Fox and guys like Rush Limbaugh, you guys know it's all just a goof, right? You're just horsing around. You're doing it 'cause you know it'll be entertaining?" It doesn't stop there, things got even more heated when the topic turned to the war in Iraq. "Let me ask you a question -- was there more heinous, more dangerous violence taking place (before the U.S.-led coalition invaded in 2003) Iraq, or is there more heinous, dangerous violence taking place now in Iraq?" asked Letterman. "Oh, stop it," O'Reilly said. "Saddam Hussein slaughtered 300,000 to 400,000 people, all right, so knock it off ... It isn't so black and white, Dave -- it isn't, 'We're a bad country. Bush is an evil liar.' That's not true."

In a tape previewed by Page Six, things go downhill fast as O'Reilly sits down and jokingly presents the liberal-leaning host with a plastic sword to do battle and holds up a plastic shield to defend himself.
An irritated Letterman cracks, "Oh, that's nice, that's cute, you come out with toys . . . Am I right about one thing: You guys over there at Fox and guys like Rush Limbaugh, you guys know it's all just a goof, right? You're just horsing around. You're doing it 'cause you know it'll be entertaining?" Letterman adds he's never seen O'Reilly's show because, "I dial up Fox and it's always 'The Simpsons.' "
O'Reilly tries to lighten the mood by telling the audience he and Letterman are "on the same bowling league" and asks whether he'd appear on "Dancing With the Stars."
"Bonehead!" snaps Letterman, who then starts shaking his fist and waving his arms at O'Reilly as the subject turns to the war in Iraq. "Let me ask you a question - was there more heinous, more dangerous violence taking place [before America invaded] Iraq, or is there more heinous, dangerous violence taking place now in Iraq?"
"Oh, stop it," O'Reilly scolds the host. "Saddam Hussein slaughtered 300,000 to 400,000 people, all right, so knock it off . . . It isn't so black and white, Dave - it isn't, 'We're a bad country. Bush is an evil liar.' That's not true."
"I didn't say he was an evil liar," Letterman shoots back. "You're putting words in my mouth, just the way you put artificial facts in your head!"
Letterman admits he hasn't read O'Reilly's new book, "Culture War," because "I looked at it. I said, 'What is it, a book on sailing?' "
Checking his watch to signal an end to the insult-a-thon, Letterman sarcastically quips, "Oh, gosh, where has the time gone?" He adds: "I have no idea what I'm talking about - but I don't think you do, either."

David Letterman treated FNC's Bill O'Reilly and conservative views with disdain as the two got into a bit of tempest when O'Reilly last appeared on the Late Show back on Tuesday, January 3, as detailed in my NewsBusters post of the time (with video), “Letterman Denounces Iraq War, Sheehan Critics.” O'Reilly will be a guest again on tonight's (Friday) show which was, oddly, taped on Monday and thus allowed Letterman to talk about it a bit on Thursday's program. Letterman hasn't gained any admiration for O'Reilly in the past ten months, as demonstrated by how he recalled: “The last time he was on the show I caught him lying. And I said to myself, well you better do something, you just can't sit here and let this guy lie, so I jumped all over him and there was a bit of a dust-up.” Letterman also revealed his strategy for the interview: “He's a blowhard, I'll be a blowhard too. So when he comes out what I do is I attack him. And I just make a fool of myself and, of course, I have no idea what I'm talking about and neither does he.” (Summary of Letterman's remarks back in January follow.)
Update, 8:15pm EDT: The Late Show Web site has posted (on its "Big Show Highlights" page) a 3:39 streaming Real video from Friday's show of a very heated argument between O'Reilly and Letterman, with some insults from Letterman, over Iraq. Displaying a hostility to President Bush and the Iraq war similar to that expressed by Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart, on Tuesday’s Late Show David Letterman went further than I’ve ever heard him in revealing his derision for President Bush’s decision to launch the Iraq war and contempt for anyone who dares to criticize Cindy Sheehan.
Letterman normally tries to make the guest look as good and entertaining as possible. But he greeted FNC’s Bill O’Reilly with disdain. When O’Reilly urged an end to tagging Bush as a “liar,” scolded Cindy Sheehan for calling the insurgents “freedom fighters” and urged people to be “very careful with what we say" in disparaging others, Letterman took him to task: "Well, and you should be very careful with what you say also." Letterman demanded: "How can you possibly take exception with the motivation and the position of someone like Cindy Sheehan?" And he tried to discredit O’Reilly’s contention: “Have you lost family members in armed conflict?" When O'Reilly conceded that "no, I have not," Letterman castigated him: "Well, then you can hardly speak for her, can you?"
Letterman mockingly recalled: "The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?" Letterman demanded: “Why the Hell are we there to begin with?" When O’Reilly pointed out that the British, Russians and Egyptians also presumed Iraq had WMD, Letterman retorted: “Well then that makes it all right?" Turning unusually serious, Letterman soon lectured: “I'm very concerned about people like yourself who don't have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ. Honest to Christ." That prompted O’Reilly to contend: “No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter' on my program." To which Letterman fired back: “I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap.”

No one believes me, but on NBC in the 80s Letterman was hilarious and brilliantly innovative -- the greatest late night show of of all time. It's sad to see how unfunny he's become...

Does this mean he believes that anyone who goes thru a tragedy can, forever and ever, say anything they like and no one can call them on it? That is sillier than anything I've ever heard Letterman say, and that's saying alot.
I trhink I'll watch him and Bill go at it tonight, though.

I did used to watch him, way back when, on occasion. And yeah, he could be pretty funny in a dry sort of way. But that was a zillion years ago. I have tried to tune in more recently and just cannot watch him.

Oh, Keltik, I was there...he was brilliant. I was in college, and my buddies would all get together to watch the show. He was so different than what we were used to with Carson and all. We loved him. Unfortunately, he hasn't changed his schtick for the last 25 years. What is funny when done by a man in his 30's, is sometimes pathetic when done by a man in his 60's. He's just.....passe. Which is probably the worst thing you could be when you're a talk show host. And insulting your guests? That's not good whoever you are.

Thing is, I don't know whether you're describing Letterman or O'Reilly, and it works either way.
Letterman is an idiot. He seems to forget that O'Reilly is an invited "guest". Leno may be a lib, but he's always polite to his guests.

you're right Letterman WAS hilarious, it makes me sad that all these late night talk guys have these political guests and get serious about the "issues" ...just be a moron and be funny ...that's your job
