After several days of criticism over his insulting and offensive remarks about what "unbelievable brightness and cheer," gambling brings to the, "very gray lives," of seniors, Ed Rendell yesterday sought to, uh, "clarify," his views on the positive role of gambling in their lives.
"Congratulations on your clarification, Governor," said Swann Communications Director Leonardo Alcivar. "Pennsylvanians are now comforted by your belief that seniors losing $30 dollars a day is just fine."
"The past two weeks of front page headlines on the Governor's abuse of the state plane, and now on his disgraceful views about the lives of our seniors, raise serious questions about his judgment, his temperament, and his commitment to the lives of our seniors."
See Rendell's comments below:
Reporter: Are you at all concerned the comments you made recently concerning the seniors and gambling, are you at all concerned that hurting your lead?
Rendell: "No those were taken way out of context and I said there were some seniors and this is true, who do live in a very grey existence. They live in their homes and don't get visited or don't get visited much, and I know that's the case because so many seniors tell me what it is to have meals delivered or home healthcare delivered not just for the services but cause its nice to see someone and they do enjoy it very much going and maybe they'll lose $30 dollars a day, but that's better than going out to dinner and a movie because they enjoy it so much. And gaming is exciting and it's colorful and if it's done responsibly it can be a very, very positive thing in people's lives. its another form of entertainment, its probably better than spending $30 dollars on a steak and having the red meat going to your cholesterol count."
In a story from last week's Lancaster New Era, here is Ed Rendell on senior citizens and gambling:
"These are people who lead very gray lives. They don't see their sons and daughters very much. They don't have much social interaction. There's not a whole lot of good things that happen in their month," the governor said of some seniors.
"But if you put them on the bus they're excited. They're happy. They have fun. They see bright lights. They hear music. They pull that slot machine and with each pull they think they have a chance to win," he said...It's unbelievable what brightness and cheer it brings to older Pennsylvanians," he said. "Unbelievable."
Since Pennsylvania is the second most populated state with seniors, I would hope that they pay attention to the comments, about them, from a do-nothing Governor who doesn't deserve a second term!!!!
Thanks Sam, and don't hold your breath on your tag (Pennsylvania-They haven't taxed air--yet). Fast Eddie isn't done yet!
Has he ever watched grannies in Atlantic City? Extremely aggressive folks. They are not there to increase there ability to live the good like, they are there to challenge the odds and have fun.
Doesn't this play into the Dems hands? If they keep you poor, you have to go on welfare, food stamps, etc....
If your Republican, you know better...
You bet it does... The rats can then argue that the government must pay an additional $300/month gambling allowance to seniors so they will not be relegated to living such dreary lives.
