ALBANY - Attorney General Eliot Spitzer delivered a devastating blow yesterday to Alan Hevesi, withdrawing his re-election endorsement, saying the scandal-scarred state comptroller is unfit for office, and laying the groundwork for a replacement.
In an extraordinary statement that could set in motion the end of Hevesi's long political career, Spitzer, the all-but-certain next governor, said he is convinced the Ethics Commission's scathing conclusion that the comptroller broke the law by using a state worker to chauffeur his wife "presents information that compromises Alan Hevesi's ability to fulfill his responsibilities."
Spitzer then went on to say he believed that fellow Democrat Hevesi's little-known Republican challenger, Christopher Callaghan, was also unqualified to be state comptroller.
"Therefore, I can no longer support either candidate in the state comptroller's race. I am confident that the state Senate proceedings will carefully evaluate the facts and recommend appropriate action," Spitzer said. "In the event that Mr. Hevesi is removed from office through such a proceeding, it is the obligation of state leaders to act in a bipartisan manner to find a highly qualified replacement."
Spokesman Darren Dopp told The Post that Spitzer also believes that Hevesi should not continue as state comptroller even if he's re-elected on Nov. 7.
"He believes that Hevesi can't properly fulfill the responsibilities as comptroller and shouldn't continue to serve in that position," Dopp said.
Hevesi responded defiantly - refusing to resign or give up his increasingly desperate battle.
"I have a great deal of respect for Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and believe he will be an excellent governor and implement essential reforms," Hevesi said. "I also believe that 5 million New Yorkers should select the next state comptroller on Nov. 7."
In fact, a Marist poll released last night showed Hevesi leading Callaghan by a still-healthy 50 percent to...

Does anyone know how to print the NY Post's front page since they changed their homepage format? "ELIOT SPITZ ON AL" was their actual headline on their front page.
This is, if nothing else, a raw demonstration of Spitzer's power. In a state of huge Democratic egos (Schumer? Hillary? Cuomo?) Spitzer has without doubt the biggest. If he can flick Hevesi -- a Schumer ally -- away, he's showing who owns New York now.
Hevesi just saw the bus he just got thrown under.
It seems that Spitz is not letting the Hev man ruin his coronation.
spitzer wants to "swap" Tom Suozzi into this slot - which would be fine with me, since he is ruining nassau county.
so if Hevesi does win the election, then how does Spitzer get rid of him?
There is no doubt he is an egomaniac with a history of abusing the power of his office, often in furtherance of partisan politics.
Possible criminal prosecution, remember he pulled the same stunt with the same driver in NYC.
And let him ruin the rest of us? ;)

Believe it or not, the New York Times has just endorsed the Republican/Conservative Party candidate running against Hevesi.
I wonder whom they'll endorse in New Jersey? Menendez (D) the crook or Kean (R) the moron?
BTTT
Finally, some good news from New York.
Thanks for the ping!
