Testosterone levels declining in American males - study

FRIDAY, Oct. 27 (HealthDay News) -- The testosterone-fueled American male may be losing his punch.

Over the past two decades, levels of the sex hormone in U.S. men have been falling steadily, a new study finds.

For example, average total testosterone levels in men aged 65 to 69 fell from 503 nanograms/decileter (ng/dL) in 1988 to 423 ng/dL in 2003.

The reasons for this trend are unclear, said researchers at the New England Research Institutes in Waterdown, Mass. They noted that neither aging nor certain other health factors, such as smoking or obesity, can fully explain the decline.

"Male serum testosterone levels appear to vary by generation, even after age is taken into account," study lead author Thomas G. Travison said in a prepared statement.

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and plays an important role in maintaining bone and muscle mass. Low testosterone levels have been linked to health problems, including lowered libido and diabetes.

It's normal for men's testosterone levels to peak in their late 20s and then start to gradually decline, experts say. But this study found that overall testosterone levels are lower than they were 20 years ago.

"In 1988, men who were 50 years and older had higher serum testosterone concentrations than did comparable 50-year-old men in 1996. This suggests that some factor other than age may be contributing to the observed declines in testosterone over time," Travison said.

He and his colleagues analyzed blood samples -- along with health and other information -- from about 1,500 men in the greater Boston area who took part in the Massachusetts Male Aging Study. That study collected data in 1987-89, 1995-97, and 2002-04.

"This analysis deals with men who were born between 1915 and 1945, but our baseline data were not obtained until the late 1980s, when the elder subjects were about 70 years old, and the youngest about 45," Travison said.

"Events occurring in earlier decades could certainly help explain our results, if their effects persisted into recent years," he noted.

The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

you can see it in the average guy aged 14-25. They speak the same way. They act and talk like Valley girls. "Like, Like," has replaced the ever popular "ummm". This, IMHO, is proof positive of the emasculation of the male population. Also..Look at the TV shows. In the 80's we had tough ass Magnum PI, Matt Houston and the Fall guy. Who are we graced with today? Who are our leading men? The dainty Jude Law and the diminutive MAtthew Perry. What happened to the mustache?

Yes: It sems many republican Senators and Representatives are having a serious problem with this.

Democrats are probably having the same problem, but Senators like Murtha and Kennedy are using liquid courage in the form of Scotch whiskey to make up the difference.

It can't be blamed on lack of exercise among men today because tests show an inverse relationship. Males that have a sedentary lifestyle have total testosterone levels significantly higher than endurance-trained or weight-trained males. This is a real puzzler.

This article goes with the cell phone study that blamed cell phone use causing low testosterone. I'm 53 and don't use a cell phone and not seeing any problems.

In my lifetime - I've seen the feminization of men to the point where it is "cool" to be metro-sexual, homosexual, bisexual, pretty, weak, cowardly, sissified, politically correct and stupid.

Big and proud heterosexual white and black Christian males are the ONLY folks that are permitted subjects of insults or discrimination.

I noticed that when I worked for a Liberal female social experimenter, (who had her hair done like H!'s after the sow's co-coronation,) my libido plunged.

I suspect it is revulsion at some of the women in this geographical region that is behind it.

The testicles retract in digust, sperm counts go down, etc.

I am grateful I am not single in this generation. There ARE women around, but I would sooner stay home than date "womyn".

Which is exactly what they want.

The remedy for Testosterone decline with age is simple. Go to the gym 3 to 4 times a week and do very intense heavy weight lifting. Eat a good diet with ample protein and take a Zinc and Magnesium supplement. The Zinc and Magnesium suppress the conversion of testosterone to estrogen and the weight training naturally spikes HGH and testosterone production. I'm 48 and my recently tested serum testosterone level ( a Dr. buddy at the gym likes to establish a baseline) is the equivalent of a 20 year old. My significant other thinks it's pretty cool too. (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).
