Webb Says His Novels 'Inappropriate' for News Radio By Nathan Burchfiel CNSNews.com Staff Writer October 27, 2006

(CNSNews.com) - In an interview on Washington Post Radio Friday morning, Jim Webb, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Virginia, said excerpts of his novels are "a little bit inappropriate" to be read on news radio.

"I don't know why you're reading that on WTOP," Webb told host Mark Plotkin. "I think it's a little bit inappropriate."

Plotkin was reading an excerpt from Webb's novel "Something to Die For," in which Webb describes a female stripper performing sexual acts with a banana.

"I don't think that's appropriate for you to read on WTOP," Webb said again as Plotkin finished the excerpt. (Washington Post Radio is WTOP's sister station.)

The campaign of Republican Sen. George Allen on Thursday released excerpts from some of the war novels Webb wrote between 1978 and 2002. The books include some graphic sexual passages, as well as frequent uses of a racial slur for blacks and descriptions of Vietnamese women as "monkey-faced."

Among the excerpts is a scene from the 2002 novel "Lost Soldiers," in which a man embraces his four-year-old son and places the boy's penis in his mouth.

Webb said the release of the excerpts was "a Karl Rove campaign tactic" and a "classic example of the way this campaign has worked. It's smear after smear."

He defended his fiction as "illuminative."

"It's not a sexual act," Webb told Plotkin regarding the "Lost Soldiers" excerpt. "I actually saw this happen in a slum in Bangkok when I was there as a journalist."

"The duty of a writer is to illuminate his surroundings," he added.

Coincidentally, a Cambodian woman in Las Vegas is facing sexual assault charges for performing a similar act on her young son, according to an Oct. 14 report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The article quotes an office manager for the Cambodian Association of America, who described the act as a sign of respect or love. Webb criticized the Allen campaign for focusing on excerpts from his novels.

"The most important issue facing the country, he hasn't got a statement to make on it," Webb said of the Iraq war. "This country's been breaking into pieces economically ... they've got no position on that.

>>>It's not a sexual act," Webb told Plotkin regarding the "Lost Soldiers" excerpt. "I actually saw this happen in a slum in Bangkok when I was there as a journalist." >>>

So because it is accepted in the pedophile capital of the world he concludes that it's not a sexual act?

Maybe not to him. Maybe to him it's close to home.

Wow.

>>>Maybe he's just a Democrat being a Democrat. They're nonjudgmental, you know.>>>

Unless it's a Republican.

If it's perverted or sick, they defend it as art. It's part of their efforts to harm the culture and to mock those who believe in right and wrong. It's part of their weird habit of putting shocking things above decency. They're the party of partial birth abortion, after all. It's not easy to get them to look at anything and say "that's not good," unless it's a Republican.

True. But the MSM and the Republicans will ignore it--or just give it 'passing mention'.

Imagine how the democrats would use that against a Republican candidate, though!!

Karl Rove isn't the sick SOB who authored this crap.

Democraps are an ungodly menagerie of com/symp socialist crooks, sex perverts, baby killers, child molesters, homosexuals, treasonous unpatriotic cut and run weak kneed enemy coddler's, trial lawyers, satanist/atheists, and imbeciles.

Thank goodness he did not use the word 'maccacca' in his book.

All hell would have broke loose with the MSM.

If there's nothing wrong with his books because he's just a journalist trying to illuminate, then why doesn't he want them read on radio? He should be THANKING the great, omnipotent Carl Rove for getting these books out to the public so we ALL can be illuminated by them. I mean, if he obviously thinks they're okay to write then why is he ashamed when people read them?

(These are all rhetorical questions, btw.)

They can condemn Rove, but they cannot bring themselves to condemn this type of filth. They'll get after former Congressman Foley even though he's resigned, but they'll champion Webb who takes campaign contributions from Larry Flynt and Ms Heffner, both of whom are in the business of porn.

This race is now over, nothing left to do but count the votes.

I'm not sure about that, but I am going to assume it will have some impact on the outcome.

As a VT transplant, I was little surprised when I moved to Virginia Beach and noticed the "bible-belt" mindset here, whereby one can get a "summons" (and be fined) for uttering an obscenity in public.

One can drive around (the normally congested roads) on Sunday mornings and they are all deserted until close to noon.

Thus I am convinced that this may not play well with the Virginia populace.

See the Democrats revert to their theory that sex is a private matter. Never mind their recent indignant, feigned as we know, behavior over Foley.

When I read this story on Drudge, I knew that Webb would try to pass off the graphic passages in his books as something other than what they are: pornography. Webb claims he was only trying to be "illuminative" in these books, just telling it like it is. What B.S.

Now he's upset that the Republicans are publicizing this. Too bad. I hope the Republicans get all the mileage they can out of this "October surprise."

Chris Core....morning host on talkradio WMAL630AM in Washington DC is incensed that James Webb didn't return any phone calls requesting him to come on to address this latest issue headlined on Drudge.

Webb RAN to WTOPAM talk radio which is considered 'safe haven'...and Chris is livid...since he is by far the most fair of all hosts on that station.

"'Lost Soldiers,' in which a man embraces his four-year-old son and places the boy's penis in his mouth."

Can we get a definition of "places penis into mouth?" /sarc

I didn't get a chance to hear Chris this morning - but I can imagine he would be none too pleased about Webb ignoring his calls.

Precisely. Shouldn't he be GRATEFUL at all the free publicity for his book?

Won't this free publicity help him sell even MORE copies of that book?

Isn't that why he wrote it? To sell as many as he can to as many people as possible?

Webb should be happy and THANKFUL at the chance to make as many people aware of that book as possible--at NO COST for the free advertisment!

I'm sure he'll say its anthropology, or sociology, or factual reporting of a people's customs. But he's sick.

Yeah, you'd think he was ashamed of his books or something. ;-)
