General CCW application question
Posted on 10/26/2006 5:59:16 PM PDT by Apogee
Here is a question relating to CCW applications: For those states that require fingerprinting, are sets taken and compared to a database then discarded, or are they added to a database?
Local leo's have not been able to answer this, saying htey really weren't sure. I have heard both, but have not found a definitive answer, and would appreciate links to official sources.
Of course, the question of whether records are destroyed just because it is the law is another one altogether...
Thank you,

Given the "tenor of the times," and despite what any sort of statute might tend to indicate, I'd pretty much plan on these fingerprints staying in a database somewhere until the mountains fall into the sea.

What purpose are fingerprints if they are not on file To determine who you *aren't*. Then for non criminals, they should be discharded. Whether they are taken for service, military service or even DUI. Only those prints of convicted felons should be retained. But that's not the way it is. I suspect the prints that were taken when I was a Cub Scout are still on file, and I'm sure the ones when I went into ROTC, 35 years ago, are.

Prints are just another expensive addition to the process that accomplishes no useful purpose
its extra money for the cops, and they'll defend that there's the possibility that fingerprint scans will turn up records from other states.
i don't feel too singled out here in MI tho. up here you have to get fingerprinted to run a daycare.

I'm surprised to hear that individual states might be running their own fingerprint database. I't was my understanding that the FBI maintained a U.S. database and that individual states would submit prints for analysis.
cities, counties and states all often keep fingerprint records. if a crime is committed, and you run fingerprints, its a lot quicker to check a smaller database for prints.
