Michigan's Messy DeVos
WSJ ^ | October 26, 2006 | SHIKHA DALMIA

Posted on 10/26/2006 4:57:16 AM PDT by Brilliant

Besides the Tigers, the main thing on the minds of Michigan residents is the state's tanking economy. So when the state's most prominent Republican businessman entered the gubernatorial fray...it should have been a home run. Instead, 10 days before the election, Dick DeVos has lost his 15-point summer lead ...and is now trailing by more than eight points... At a time when Michigan needs economic leadership, he has so far shown little charisma...

That Michigan has become the Mississippi of the Midwest is no secret (actually, Mississippi is doing better...). While the rest of the country is experiencing real overall growth of 3.2%, Michigan is in a single-state recession. Its unemployment rate, at 7.1%, is twice the national average; it was the only state last year not hit by a hurricane to lose jobs. Personal per capita income is 7% below the national average. Home foreclosure rates have doubled this year. And over the last four years, 200,000 economic refugees have left the state...

Ms. Granholm's chief strategy for dealing with Michigan's grim economic situation, comically enough, is to blame Mr. DeVos, even though the ...only... time he held elected office was as a member of the State Board of Education a decade ago. She has lambasted Amway, his company, which does business in 90 countries, for opening offices in China and "outsourcing" Michigan jobs. She has accused him of personally "allowing" the sexual abuse of mentally ill elder citizens because he had a 1% stake in a publicly traded nursing home chain where some incidents were recently discovered. And just when one thought this Hollywood-starlet-turned-Harvard-lawyer couldn't get any nastier, she did another hit job in their last debate, accusing him of tax evasion for incorporating some of Amway's overseas subsidiaries in Bermuda...

If you vote for charisma, then don't complain when the economy goes bad.

A friend of mine in Michigan sent this to me in an e-mail yesterday:

"The women of Michigan are out working for Granholm's reelection while their husbands are out looking for jobs. Go figure."

Amway? I thought people were smart enough to stay away from pyramid schemes.

200,000 economic refugees have left the state...

What is an 'economic refugee'?

So now leaving a State to find a job makes one an 'economic refugee'?

I'm not thrilled with DeVos but I'll vote for him. He can always be removed if he proves to be another RINO.

Oh how I yearn for the early days of John Engler.

The whole government is one great big pyramid scheme.

DeVos also owns the Orlando Magic. If Michigan doesn't want Amway, I'm sure that Florida will be glad to take it.

Seems like the country had about 8 years of charisma back in the '90s. I was sick of it the first day it started.
Boring is underrated.

State employees aren't thrilled with Canadian Trash Jenny either.

I'm more than willing to bet we'll see an Engler-esque win for DeVos. Polls and the talking heads were very wrong about Walberg's win over Schwarz and I'm sure they'll be wrong about another CTJenny win.

What's the story on that? Thought I read someplace that she was blaming somebody else for taking in Canadian trash. Oh wait, are you talking about her or the trash? /sarcasm

I left MI in '87. It was a bastion of liberals then and apparently it has gotten no better.

Back during the recession of '78-'80, the saying was:

"Last person out of Michigan, turn out the lights."

Jenny is from Canada. I think she rode in on one of those trash barges from Toronto.

She should buy herself a return ticket, and soon.

We are very late in this national business cycle. If Michigan is not careful, it will completely miss one of the biggest economic expansions in history. And if the national economy goes bad, Michigan may end up with 15% or more unemployment.

I know she is from Canada, but whose idea was it to take in Canada's trash?

Corporate America IS a pyramid scheme:

1. You'll never make more than the guy above you
2. Someone at a highr level has to die, quit or go to jail before you can get a shot at their position.

I believe it was part of NAFTA, which was signed by Clinton.

An "inconvenient truth" that liberal dems don't like to remember.
