Inside Today's N. Korea: Fistfight between Cops and a Shuttle Driver

Late August this year on a road between Pyongyang and Sariwon

TOPICS: Culture/Society; Extended News; Foreign Affairs; News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: cops; fistfight; northkorea; video
A video is smuggled out of N. Korea, which shows events inside N. Korea. A man was traveling from Sariwon(South Western N. Korea) to Pyongyang, recording various events.

/begin my excerpt

One of them is the fight that broke out between cops and a driver of Sobie(?) car(note: the privately-operated shuttle, offering service for a fee.) This occurred just outside Sariwon.

It started when young cops(in early 20's) tried to force the shuttle to stop, which was heading for Hwang-ju County. Cops tried to stop it but its driver attempted to drive right past them. Then the cops jumped on the car, and smashed its window, on the opposite side of the driver. Then the fistfight ensued.

Passengers swore at brazen cops, who smashed window and picked a fight.

The man who took the video narrates that this is the today's N. Korea where abusive cops and ordinary folks who no longer take their abuse go at each other.

In addition to young cops, there is a senior cop in the photo, who is carrying file-folders. There is also a soldier who just happened to be there and tried to break up the fight.

Later, a man in white uniform and white hat shows up. He is a traffic cop who happened to be on duty nearby.

No food, no clothes, no heat, no work, no money, no place to go, nothing to do. Makes people surly.

I must say I find your posts fascinating. They're a window into a hidden part of the world.

Why did the cops try to stop it, and why didn't the driver stop?

if the person was driving or being driven in a car, how would you consider him an ordinary citizen? he had to be connected to possess or have access to an automobile.

I am just guessing, but this is a private transportation car according to the story and I bet cops ride free.

I suspect that both of you are right. Most likely cops are ripping off people like this driver. Either free ride, or want a cut for letting him operate.

Re #7

Well, the likely scenario is that he works as a driver at some office or factory. He is moonlighting with the car from his workplace, with wink and nod from his superiors. Typically, he has to grease their palms.

He is an ordinary guy who has an access to a car. In a way, he is luckier than other guys.

China was just like this during and after the Cultural Revolutions. People were constantly at each others' throats. It seems very similar. I was in China not long after GPCR (Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution) and you saw fistfights over the slightest things; people had also been spying on each other too much. The social structure was one of extreme tension between people, while the fat bastards in thie palaces sat back and had all their opulent fun.

Re #15

Come to think of it, Mao was a big fat b*stard. And Kim Jong-il is a small fat b*stard. LOL!

An interesting parallel. N. Korea now and PRC then. Thanks for your comments.
