According to reports I read the letter was improperly translated. It said "illegal immigrants and aliens". They conveniently left that part out.
Mr. Tan's attorney tried to sell that story, but, alas... a lot of people in Los Angeles (and elsewhere) can read Spanish. The attorney tried to claim "emigrado" meant "emigrado ilegal"... which it doesn't. Mr. Tan's letter said "ANY immigrant who votes could go to jail." And, intentional or not, that is voter supression.

He's not the only political candidate to have shot himself in the foot this year. It seems to be a pattern lately. What's bizarre are the ways people try to "spin" these gaffes... and unfortunately, some of us fall for the spin.

there is no debate in context the letter encouraged legal voters to participate, and that if somebody was here illegally they could not vote.
