BARF ALERT...

Michael J. Fox ad a powerful cell

By Neil Steinberg, The Chicago Sun-Times; October 25, 2006 Wednesday

Have you seen the TV spot Michael J. Fox taped to support Claire McCaskill, the Democrat running for U.S. Senate in Missouri? It's been running during the World Series or you can watch it on YouTube.

The actor, who has Parkinson's Disease, sits looking directly into the camera, his shoulders rocking and face twitching as he delivers a short message beginning, "As you might know, I care deeply about stem cell research. . . ."

It is his bravest performance, a stark rebuke to a country that allows science to be held hostage to a narrow reading of a certain faith. It is outrageous that stem cell research, which will someday bring advances to numerous ailments, is hobbled by those who put the welfare of a handful of cell clumps the humanity of which is purely notional above the welfare of every single person living in the world now, plus those yet to be.

Untold millions will suffer in the name of those who will never feel at all -- I'm referring to the stem cells, not those opposed to the research. Though, if the shoe fits. . . .
