Iraqi Government Plans to Demobilize Illegal Militias

WASHINGTON, Oct. 24, 2006 – The Iraqi government has plans to demobilize all illegal militias, including radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s so-called “Mahdi Army,” the senior U.S. diplomat in Iraq said today.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki “has agreed to getting rid of the militias,” U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad told reporters at a Baghdad news conference.

Illegal militias that commit violence and murder need to be dealt with, Khalilzad said, noting the Iraqi government recognizes that fact.

Maliki wants to demobilize all the militias, including al-Sadr’s, Khalilzad said. Yet, he noted, U.S. officials don’t have direct contact with Sadr, although there is some interaction with some of Sadr’s representatives in the Iraqi Assembly.

Khalilzad said he believes that an integrated, political approach is the best way to try to convince militia leaders to disband their men and stack arms.

However, Maliki doesn’t rule out the use of force to coerce the militias to disband, Khalilzad said. “We will see what happens,” he added.

Khalilzad said he believes the Iraqi government is taking the right path in addressing the militia issue. Iraq’s prime minister is anxious for Iraqis to assume more security roles and responsibilities, to include dealing the problem of militias, the ambassador said.

Meanwhile, U.S., coalition and Iraqi security forces “are actively tracking, targeting, detaining people who are operating in death squads, and their leadership, who are breaking the law,” Army Gen. George W. Casey Jr, commander of Multinational Force Iraq, said.

When Iraq’s government zeroes in on the militia issue, then the Iraqi security forces will become the dominant security forces in the country, Casey predicted.

“I think it will happen,” he said.

And he reads the Rush and Sean threads too. He really beat up Oldfreind for her criticisms of him, Rush and Sean on these threads

Wrong. Old Friend called him an asshole first, and Mark fought back. Please set the record straight and be honest about it. Thanks

Sean won't even acknowledge us anymore when we were once in his good graces.

It was Sean who made me aware of FR, in early 2005. He was saying negative things about it in response to a caller on his show. I remember thinking, "That FR sounds interesting--I should check it out." I did, that day, and have been a happy FReeper ever since.

So for relatively recent members like me, what happened to drive Sean away? The impression I got from his comments is that he disliked the libertarian element of FR.

Since MJF is an actor, he was in front of a camera....he WAS acting. He was acting out on film (for the DNC) the ravages of the disease. So yes, Fox was acting. He's already admitted to going off the meds.

Rush is right on both counts.

I think Robert E. Lee was a great, great man. I've always maintained that his Myers-Briggs type must have been INFP.

Would you be honest enough to report on the context of my fury.

A little thing like Levin going on the air and telling people not to vote for Kean in NJ because he criticized Rush. He then went on to tell folks not to vote for Chaffee either.

I took great offense to that.

I think those that are commenting on his appearance in the ad are completely missing the point. (That doesn't include you RasterMaster).

The ad itself is perpetuating a lie by saying this amendment is whether or not stem cell research should be legalized in the MO Constitution.

The amendment has NOTHING to do with stem cell research, and EVERYTHING to do with human cloning.

If MJF wants to show the full-blown ravages of Parkinson's, that's his business. But to back Democrats right down the line in an ad supporting an amendment that has NOTHING to with ESCR, is abhorrent.

Never thought I'd say this, but how about he jumps back to Canada and rejoins their socialist medical system, since he's looking for gov't control in this. If its so great a system, go the heck back.

I'll criticize him, with no holes barred, let me at him.
