How did he get out so fast? Was this a medical or something?

Most likely was in the Reserves. SOP for Reserves (used to be anyway).

When you join the reserves or guard directly, rather than after serving on active duty, you only serve on active duty long enough for your initial training, or 180 days, whichever is more. IIRC the entire 180 days (or more) counts as Active Duty For Training, not active duty time. That's really only important for determination of Veteran status. The "points" count for retirement either way. (There's also some "money" bucket issues, but those don't really affect the individual, after the fact anyway).
