New Jersey's case has been closely watched in part because both advocates and opponents of gay marriage think New Jersey's highest court is more likely to allow it than courts in most places. Similar cases are pending in a handful of states.

The ruling is to come on Deborah Poritz's final day as chief justice. Under the state constitution, she must retire Thursday, the day she turns 70.
