I don't understand why conservatives "can't afford" to vote for the only conservative running. To me, it is the only logical vote a true conservative would give.

Because you just can't get enough votes to elect the most conservative candidate in this case. Since Lieberman has switched away from the Dems, a vote for him is a block on Lamont. It basically takes the seat off the playing field.

Lieberman will still caucus with the Dems, so if we have a 50/50 tie, Lieberman would give control to the Dems.
