John Mark Karr's Neighbors Want Him Out
CBS NEWS ^ | Oct. 24, 2006

(CBS/AP) An Atlanta neighborhood association continues to discuss residents' concerns about the man who briefly was a suspect in the slaying of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey and is now living in the community.

Living about a mile from a playground, John Mark Karr makes many parents uneasy, reports CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann.

"I was shocked and very disappointed that he's not behind bars," said Kelly Seagraves, the mother of a 6-year-old. "I've kind of sheltered him from it, because it hadn't been a concern to us. But now it's going to directly affect us and I'm going to have to talk to him about it."

In a telephone interview Monday, Karr told CBS affiliate WGCL he loves Atlanta and it breaks his heart that his neighbors feel so strongly about him. He said the neighborhood is just as safe today as it was before he moved in. He also said he is not a sex offender, and it is unfair to treat him that way.

Members of the Chastain Park Civic Association met again Monday night at a private school near the park to discuss their concerns.

Last week, the president of the association sent an e-mail to the group's two-thousand homeowner-members announcing that John Mark Karr has moved into his father's home in the north Atlanta neighborhood where houses are on the market for more than $600,000 dollars.

"When you have mothers calling you on the phone who are frightened and crying and fearful for their children's safety, you have to take that seriously. You have to take action," civic association president Jim King told Strassmann.

The e-mail points out that Karr's home is near a playground and states "as you may recall there have been many published reports in newspapers on Mister Karr relating to incidents in Colorado, California, and Thailand," followed by an Internet link to media reports about Karr.

After Karr's release from a California jail on Oct. 5, he said he intended to live with his father in Atlanta and possibly a return to teaching.

"I've been here 55 years. I've got a right to stay here," Wexford Karr told a local reporter, adding that his son is welcome to stay with him as long as he wants.

Karr has not been convicted of any crime that would require him to register as a sex offender or restrict where he can live or work.

"There's nothing legally we can do to get him out of our neighborhood and I don't know how much pressure the civic association and security can do about him," Gillian Sherbourne, the mother of three girls, tells WGCL. "All I know is it completely freaks me out."

Soon after taking a teaching job in Thailand, Karr was arrested in August and brought to the United States after he claimed to have killed JonBenet, the child beauty queen found strangled in her home in Boulder, Colo., in 1996.

Authorities later said DNA evidence showed Karr confessed to a crime he did not commit.

After being cleared in the slaying, Karr was sent to California to face charges of possessing child pornography. But the case was dropped and he was released Oct. 5 because investigators had lost crucial evidence.

One wonders how long before somebody else seeking their five minutes of fame ends this chapter of this man's life.

Anyone can go to the archives and read the statements of the father, Wexford Karr. He didn't even know where his son was for over SEVEN YEARS. Methinks he's trying to cash in his son's depravity. The father should be able to keep his property, but if I lived in that neighborhood, I'd do everything I could to get the pervert son out of there.

The Boulder, CO DA and PD should have bought him an isolated cabin. It's the least they could do after the mess they made for everyone. The snapping hyenas in the MSM really clobbered us with that sick story.

Re: charges dropped in California.

.....because investigators lost crucial evidence.

None too popular an opinion here, but I will chance it. Thank you prosecutor Mary Lacy. The criticism you faced is worthwhile. This man could have gotten quietely deported from Thailand.

He could have been the monster at large in his father's neigbourhood. He could have had his relatives check on those charges in California. He could have then slipped back into the USA.

The face of deception. John Mark Karr. No longer.

wait a second...he's never been accused of actually touching a child, has he? You'd think after all the publicity that if he did do something, someone would have come out of the woodwork. He's a deeply disturbed individual and belongs in a hospital.

Hildy. Long time in not contradicting you. (laughs). That cunning old fox Larry King, had John Mark Karr on his show, Karr is a dog for publicity. King pulled out every subtle trick in his repertoire. For once I cheered on King. Karr slightly more cunning.

Redoubtable interviewer, Dr Ablow was shown, with Karr. Oh, by the way, Karr is innocently asked-"can you tell us what countries and what schools you taught in".

Switch to Karr, waving hands like a windmill. Looked like he was flagging down an errant truck driver. A mode of panic. What deprived, poor country did he teach in? What poor children who hardly know anything, possibly no American television coverage, would "come out of the woodwork"?.

" The father should be able to keep his property"

Well, that's charitable of you.

Huh? That's not even the point of my post, sir.
The original article quotes Wexford Karr as saying that he's lived there for 55 yrs. He is not the issue. His creepy pervert son is, and it is suspicious that after 7 yrs. and Wexford's admission that he thought his son was dead, that he'd allow JM to live in his home.

I don't care about the father's property, but I don't think that the neighbors, also property owners, should have to endure the son's presence. Anything else?

It's nice to know you favor letting the father keep his home.

Fer cryin' out loud, dude, what did you expect when you told the world that YOU were the one who took the life of a little girl?? That when it was proved out it could not possibly have been done by you, everyone would just "Oh, well good ... come on here" or something?

You've proven you're one sick puppy -- no place is safe with you around, sex offender or not. That is what these moms are up-in-arms about. Just how fairly have YOU treated the world in which you live, eh???

Well, if he's not been accused of anything, how can we put him in jail? Hence my hospital comment. Hoping his family would intervene.
