It appears to be centered approximately 180 miles NNW of Iwo Jima.

Dunno, I think it's subduction zone. Just a little further south is the Mariana Trench.

I think you are correct. Divergence plates are found in the mid atlantic. A subduction plate would be in an area with high earthquake and volcanic activity.

Does that bring back memories?

Sort of ... I went thru Parris Island in the spring of 1964 ... 19 years after the landing on Iwo Jima. One of the motivational/history of the Corps films we were shown was the amphibious landing and subsequent battle on Iwo. One of the shots taken was by a Marine combat cameraman as a Jap shell exploded in the frame ... he was killed but the film was recovered.
