The agent, who is not identified by name in the reports noted by Mitrokhin, had a wide circle of influential contacts in the Democratic Party: among them Governor Jerry Brown of California, Senator Alan Cranston, Senator Eugene McCarthy, Senator Edward Kennedy, Senator Abraham Ribicoff, Senator J. William Fulbright and Congressman John Conyers, Jr. During the 1976 Presidential campaign the agent was able to provide inside information from within the Carter camp and a profile of Carter himself, which were particularly highly valued by the Centre since it had so few high-level American sources.

Am only just now following what has been written and discussed here - but when news came out of Anna Politkovskaya's assassignation and I read subsequent articles about current political movements in Russia, my mind went back to what I remember being discussed on FR about Clinton's visit as well. Would be interested to go back and found out if the people named in the quote had any workings/dealings with WJC's political career leading up to and throughout WJC's bid for presidency. Until his visit to the USSR is fully explained, he will always have the stink of treason.

Hi, Alkhin!--sent you a FReepmail! :-)

Off the top of my head, Clinton's main early antiwar contacts were with Fulbright and his staff, the Vietnam Moratorium Committee (VMC), the Oxford antiwar group I mentioned in the earlier post from Thomas, a family he knew in Czechoslovakia (IIRC), and later, the antiwar movement at Yale. Fulbright was in the antiwar movement a few years before Tunney got involved with it and knew some of the same people the Kennedys did in the Senate antiwar bloc, but I think Clinton probably didn't get too close to the KGB until after he got involved with the VMC and went to Oxford and joined the VMC's counterpart there, and he was probably handled by a different network during that phase of his career than that Tunney seems to have drifted towards later in the 70s with Karr, etc. It's possible Clinton was pointed in that direction by someone he met through Fulbright, who probably had KGB agents hovering around him among Senate staffers (IIRC the FBI had a file on his contacts with Communist-bloc embassies in Washington while he was conducting his antiwar hearings--they documented that his speeches were influenced by Communist propaganda but they weren't able to prove any specific espionage activity, is my recollection); and this person hypothetically may have later become one of Tunney's contacts in Washington, but I have no specific evidence of that (just thinking out loud here as I try to address the issue you raise), and if it happened I think it's probably somewhat of a tangent from the main vector of Clinton's path. I think Clinton likely was pointed towards his path by hanging around the VMC and got in progressively deeper from there after he went to Oxford and Yale. Now when he was at Yale he and Hillary did develop some contacts with the Kennedys' extended circle through faculty members involved in the Watergate investigation and Church Committee-related developments, which probably brought them into contact with some of the people hanging around Kennedy and Tunney in Washington. Whether these contacts included any KGB agents linked to Tunney I don't know.

But there may be a point of contact with Hillary rather than Bill. The anonymous KGB agent described in the document which is the focus of my article was apparently run from the San Francisco KGB residency, which I believe was housed in the Soviet embassy and was the center of KGB activity on the West Coast. During one summer when she was at Yale, Hillary went out to California and interned with a pair of Communist lawyers, Robert Treuhaft and Jessica Mitford, who had strong ties to the ACLU in the San Francisco area. I think it's likely whoever was running the KGB agent discussed in my article would've had at least supervisory responsibility for any KGB activities linked to Treuhaft and Mitford. Now I don't know if Treuhaft and Mitford were very close to any specific KGB activity--CPUSA certainly but not necessarily KGB (possibly Cuban intelligence, though--their son works on Cuban-related stuff)--but if there was anything going on it might have involved the same SF-based KGB network that handled the agent who is the focus of my post.

That's a lot of yakking for not answering your question, probably, LOL, but those are my thoughts FWIW.
