First of all, once Hillary Care begins, we will all be fine. sarc.
Second, if I get to the point where I believe that I might need long term care and have the house paid, I am going to go on a year long vacation/cruise throughout the world and spend every dime. I will give the kids a bit, but after paying taxes on the house the entire life of the loan and then some...forget the state getting MORE out of it.
Third, thank God they allowed the spouse who survives gets to stay in the house until they pass on. That is a great rule the state gives.
Fourth, it is a shame that people work their entire lives and everything ends up back to the state.
We are not talking about people who in some cases don't even have a choice to stay in these homes. What if the family MADE them go into a home or better yet the doctor or state made them....do they have to pay then? NO!!!
Flame away. I can't way. Sometimes FREEPERS are so holier than thou it is amazing. Yes you are all my FRiends, but can I be frustrated with some of you???? Not you SmithL.

This would be logical and fair to me **IF** state and feds agressively pursue illegals and force them to pay their medical bills. I do not in general think the taxpayers should pay for nursing home care until all of the persons assets including home are liquidated and used up. My feeling now is that as long as we are forced to pay for illegals to have free health care; then our citizen elderly should be able to receive free care also. I think the government should collect from all the illegals before they start in on citizens.

I do think if the government is going to take remaining assests upon the death of a nursing home patient or the surviving spouse then documents to that effect should be signed and in place when the person enters the care facility. Then the family has no complaint, they knew and signed ahead of time. A system like that would also make it easier for the government to collect the assests. If family wants to keep the family home; then they should have to buy it at fair market price when the parent goes into long term care.

I sold my mom's house for her medical care. I don't think the taxpayers should have to pay for her if she has assets.

I think the family home should be exempt from any equation.

There is every reason for society to keep property in the family and keep the family "off the street."

All this does is lead to estate planning where the home is pre-planing quick claimed over to the family.

Wait a minute. I thought government health care was free!

You mean the government can confiscate and sell your home to pay for it?

If you take the government's money, you take the government's rules and regulations.

I think the rub here is that the person who has no house because they maybe rented all their life loses nothing and their care is paid for. It rubs me to a certain degree also (well to a big degree) but when I was young I was told ownin a house was security to be sold to take care of you in old age if need be. I own and solely because I do the monies can be used.

Simple solution: Kids should not put their parents in nursing homes if they want the property. Caring for them no matter what their condition is the price they pay to inherit it.

And stealing children's homes is the way to make taxpayers' whole, eh? The bureaucrats forget a family has bankrupted itself to take care of elderly parents. Now they want to throw them out on the streets to fend for themselves.

There's nothing wrong with this. Why shouldn't a person spend down all their assets before going to the taxpayers for their support?
