(WTNH/AP, Oct. 23, 2006 11:45 AM) _ Tonight will your final chance to hear the three major candidates for U.S. Senate go head-to-head on the issues. Also, the campaign of Democratic senate candidate Ned Lamont says it's filing a formal complaint with a federal agency against Senator Joe Lieberman.

Lamont's campaign says the complaint with the Federal Election Commission accuses Lieberman of failing to account for $387,000 in petty cash his campaign spent days before the state's August Democratic primary.

The Lieberman camp denies any wrongdoing.

Lieberman spokeswoman Tammy Sun says that the cash was paid to field coordinators who then distributed money to workers who were canvassing.

Meanwhile, Sen. Lieberman, Lamont and Republican Alan Schlesinger will hold their final debate tonight at the Garde Arts Center in New London. The debate is a free form event, meaning the candidates will wear microphones that allow them to move around the stage and address different people.

-snip-

Lieberman, who's running as an independent under how own party label, is gaining ground with independent voters and with men according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll.

Trailing far behind is Schlesinger, who mixed things up at the last two debates, at times drawing attention for his quick wit.

The debate will air in prime-time tonight on News Channel 8 at 8:00 and will be streamed live on WTNH.com.

LOL! I think Schlesinger will receive a FEW more votes, but not many...

I sure wish just Joe and Schlesinger were running. Perhaps Schlesinger might have a chance. Then again... NAH! Probably not here in CT...

Watched part of the last debate, Lammonbat is a scary looking guy, his face would make for a great Halloween mask.

That smile is just, weird.

You're right... he really DOES look like a moonbat (if such a thing exists) or maybe a lemur or something. Some beady-eyed animal... LOL

Losing candidates always resort to the campaign-finance angle in desperation.

Just have to LOL at Ned sitting like a girl. Schlesinger seems very confident in his manner and his ideas. Looks like an interesting time. Sitting back to enjoy!

Those RTC members I know who attended the debate thought Schlesinger did a great job again. One reported it like this "Having attended tonight's debate at the Garde Theater, I can tell you that there was a clear winner of the debate and that was surprisingly Alan Schlesinger!

There is no question that he was far and away more witty and charming than the others. Also, he talked much more about solutions than just rhetoric. I was amazed at his performance and will take interest in how it impacts the polls.

The debate, however, was marred by some Ned Lamont supporters who rudely sang and interrupted Senator Lieberman. Schlesinger actually got up and garnered a lot of applause when he said, "Show theSenator some respect!"

The debate was sponsored in part by The New London Day and they are showing video there at at http://www.theday.com.

Monday night's debate was the most entertaining debate to watch, IMO. Wow, was that raucous or what?

And how rude was George Stephanopoulos with his snarky remark: "Uh... excuse me, but, WHAT was the question again?? *giggle*..." Georgie interrupted Schlesinger in mid-thought during his response to a question about terrorism - which Schlesinger WAS getting to, regarding our porous border in Mexico. In all the years I've watched political debates, I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. My husband and I had a good laugh when Schlesinger later gently scolded Georgie on his failure to do the same thing to his guy Lamont when he rambled on about a subject that had nothing to do with the question posed to him.

Then there were the exchanges between Joe and Lamont over who is a bigger liar. Joe accusing Ned that his ads attacking Joe are 100% untrue. Ned "shocked" that Joe was (in essence) calling him a liar.

And the singing hecklers targeting Lieberman... who were they? What were they singing? All I could understand was "Lie-ber-man...". As far as I could tell, they were Lamont supporters. As Joe was trying to make his closing remarks, the hecklers completely drowned him out with singing, shouting and booing. Lamont cowered in the corner and did nothing. Stephanopoulos - the moderator - did nothing. Joe stood there - trying to speak - unfortunately ending up whining: "C'mon... c'mon...." and kind of wringing his hands. It was out completely out of control, and there were only a few minutes left to the debate at that point.

Finally, Alan Schlesinger stood up and TOOK CHARGE, shouting at the hecklers to "let Senator Lieberman speak", and then insisting that security escort them out. Stephanopoulos very weakly agreed with Schlesinger... "Oh yeah...uh, security? Would someone escort these people out of the theater?" This was after they were allowed to heckle Joe several minutes into his final remarks...

There's no doubt - Schlesinger stole the show! He's toast in this election, but maybe we can get him to run against Chris Dodd in the future... ;-)

A couple of comments about Monday night's very raucous Senate debate in #13 and #14...
