Dan Walters: California's schizoid politics

One medical dictionary describes schizophrenia as "a mental disorder (whose) symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, and grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior. Schizophrenia is accompanied by marked impairment in social or occupational functioning."

That's a pretty good description of political discourse in contemporary California, especially during this biennial exercise in reality-evasion we call a campaign.

In reality, balancing the budget would require taxes to be raised, spending to be cut or some combination of the two. But in our schizoid politics, we ignore that reality, and so do those we elect.

No body wants to raise taxes and no one wants to cut spending. Californians believe they can be conservative on taxation and liberal on governmental spending. If you ask if this can work - of course not but people apparently think they can have the best of both worlds here.
