Enoch Powell spoke the truth on immigration (1998 article)

BRITISH POLITICIAN Enoch Powell, a member of Parliament for 37 years, died on Sunday. Powell was a man of extraordinary ability, who had the courage to speak the truth on immigration. For this, he was driven from the Tory leadership and became known as the best prime minister Britain never had.

The son of teachers, Powell won a scholarship to Cambridge, was a professor of Greek at 25, enlisted in the British army as a private at the outset of World War II and rose to the rank of brigadier general.

On his death, Margaret Thatcher said: "There will never be anybody else so compelling as Enoch Powell. He had a rare combination of qualities all founded on an unfaltering belief in God, an unshakable loyalty to family and friends, and an unswerving devotion to our country."

But Powell is best remembered for a controversial 1968 address warning of the dangers to national unity from immigration, which came to be known as the "Rivers of Blood" speech.

Powell saw immigration from Britain's former colonies leading to an upsurge of crime and poverty and the fragmentation of British society. From his vantage point, the future looked bleak. "Like the Roman," Powell observed, "I seem to see the River Tiber foaming with much blood."

In 1993, Winston Churchill, grandson of Britain's wartime prime minister, made similar observations. Churchill noted that while immigrants accounted for 6 percent of the nation, in some cities they constituted half the population.

Then-Prime Minister John Major, seeking to reassure the British, predicted that 50 years hence spinsters would still bicycle to communion on Sunday morning. "More likely the muezzin will be calling Allah's faithful to the High Main Street Mosque," Churchill countered. For integrity to match his namesake's, Churchill was excoriated by members of Major's cabinet.

The article mistakenly applies the justifiably dim view Enoch Powell and Winston Churchill the younger took of immigration into Britain--mostly of Muslims from South Asia--to the American circumstance.

Legal immigration of South American and Central American Roman Catholics, of Eastern European Orthodox Christians, of Russian Jews, or of East Asian Confucianists, Buddhists, Shintoists, or Protestants (this last mostly from South Korea) even in numbers trebling the current quotas is not going to destroy America.

The same attitude against immigration met the Germans, the Irish, the Italians, the Greeks, the Poles. The notion that Mexicans, Guatemalans, Hondurans, or any of the other groups listed above (which I chose as they all show up in the 25% immigrant statistic for California), are somehow different is unsupportable.

Muslims, however, for obvious reasons drawn from the politicized, triumphalist and violence-prone nature of their 'revelation', are a different matter. Unless or until some sea-change in the dominant school of Koranic interpretation so that the verse of the sword is subordinated to the pacific suras, rather than the reverse, civilized nations have every reason to exclude Muslims.

Powell was called a racist and his speech mocked as calling for "rivers of blood".
Today, we have blood pouring into British rivers.

While some groups are more threatening than others, enough unassimilated immigrats will destroy us regardless of nation of origin.

When I first saw this I wondered what Colin Powell said about immigration. Then I realized it said 'Enoch' and not 'Eunuch'.

Mexicans, however, because of historical conflicts and resentment between the US and Mexico over now-sovereign US territory, socialist beliefs, widespread culture of corruption, and the violence-prone nature of their country of origin, are a different matter.

I see plenty of Mexican flags flying here in California. And it's not because they are showing appreciation for their heritage.

Let us be honest: the permanent political class have decided that Mexicans and others from South America, will be easier to dupe and will not complain as much about taxes and political corruption.

Therefore, the borders are being deliberately left open for the express purpose of watering down everyone else's vote.

Powell was called a racist and his speech mocked.....

Edward Heath while Prime Minister, disavowed Powell. I understand he was an enemy of Powell to the last.

Ten days after the terrible underground railway bombing in London, last July, Edward Heath died at 89 years.I believe 53 souls died and there was also a London bus blown up. My hope is that Heath was fully alert to the last. Not a nasty thing to say really.

He might well have mused on Enoch Powell.

Doubtful. Wet Tories lack intellectual honesty.
Look at the New Labor lite crowd running the British Conservative Party.

According Wikipedia (and also in a biogrpahy of Eric Claption) is this anecdote.

"In 1976, Clapton was the centre of controversy and accusations of racism, when he spoke out against increasing immigration during a concert in Birmingham. He commented that England had "...become overcrowded...that England sells itself as the "land of milk and honey" only to turn around and stick its invited immigrants into low paying labour jobs, living in substandard conditions..." Clapton also voiced his support of controversial political candidate Enoch Powell, making references to "a black colony." As a result, it would be a full decade before Clapton was welcome to play in Birmingham again.[citation needed] These comments (along with equally controversial remarks and actions by other artists, such as David Bowie and Siouxsie Sioux) led to the creation of the Rock Against Racism movement in the UK."

Some are in deep denial about the threat of the reconquista types. A big meeting was held for them in Tijuana recently. Some comments from the get together:

"All this money and effort to stop descendants of the original Americans from walking where their ancestors freely traveled before others, who really were immigrants, decided to place a border here to keep the natives out."

"Representatives of the Union del Barrio in Los Angeles testified that, "the US penal system maintains capitalism. We have many prisoners on the Other Side. They have to be part of a mass movement together with us."

"[Attending were]The Brown Berets that conducts a "Migra Watch" in its neighborhoods, under siege by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) of the US Department of Homeland Security and its frequent raids hunting for "illegals."

"But the overwhelming majority of those who came south to Tijuana for this meeting were young people, hundreds that ardently believe in "another way of doing politics," the Zapatista way."

"Students from UCLA and California State University at Northridge (CSUN) among other schools came to Tijuana to say that since the higher education systems don't tell their history well or at all, they've had to begin to do it themselves. The Community Colleges are merely a funnel to channel us into menial labor."

"Sandino Gómez, also of the Brown Berets, spoke of how the War in Iraq falls heavier upon Chicano youths. "There are more military recruiters than guidance counselors in our area," he noted."

"Instituto de Educación Popular explained the difficult lives of the jornaleros – day laborers, from California to New York Island – who wait on street corners each morning for contractors to hire them in a pinch to do construction, or pick crops, or other manual labors. "The jornaleros wait under very boring conditions," "They have no food, no water, the police harass them. They have to put up with everything." She added, proudly, "I am the daughter of a jornalero."

"Representatives of the growing sector of the Other Campaign that struggles under the banner of " Other Loves" testified about the discrimination they face. "The lesbians are called gringadas and the gay men joto-maricones … Enough already with the discrimination!" A straight Chicano man read a letter from Angel Cruz, a Oaxacan on the Other Side, saying "I am a gay queer… and I am a Zapatista

Yes, it's too easy to look the other way.
The reconquista is alive and well in California.
Anyone who thinks differently is a naive fool.

That photo should go on a T-Shirt (for males of course).
With a simple caption of

I don't know who'd be first to kill a wearer: Islamics or National Organization
of Women harpies.

Note, I raised no objection to *legal* immigration from South and Central America.

Enoch Powell was objecting to legal immigration of Muslims to Britain.

I happen to think a mixture of all the tough measures the House Republicans have advocated with a real guest-worker program is the way to go. And as long as amnesty means being regularized as guest-workers and leaving on schedule, rather than being put on a track to citizenship for sneaking in, I'd even be willing to accept an amnesty rather than deal with the logistics of shipping folks already here back.
