I voted today in a heavily Republican area of NC-11 (Charlie Taylor's district) and there was no one voting but me while I was there... FWIW, there were three poll workers, a cop, two Democrat activists at a table outside, and me - the only voter..

Anything is possible, but there is no mood for the passage of either #4 or #5 here in my little town.

Our demographics are skewed somewhere to the right of "old as dirt". Most of the females in Carson are lifelong smokers and militant about it.

As to your points on Reno, it was once a fine cowboy town. Now the news at night is more representative of Los Angeles.

Gang shootings, robberies and an endless list of Hispanic surnames and crimes.

Too bad.

We have weathered a meth epidemic for the past few years, but the tweekers are beaten back for the moment. (Dead or in jail)

Our problem is California gentrification. Real Estate is slowing but it is still overpriced and being built in every dusty field in all directions.

The mountains out my window and the lake 13 miles away (straight up) are part of this wonderful little American Town, but please don't tell anyone.

Speaking as a Californian, I apologize.

We're not all insane, but our expats aren't giving us a good name. They sound just like the illegals pining for Old Mexico. Same mentality-screw a place up, run away, and try the exact same thing at your next pit stop.

So do yourselves a favor, put up a big fence!!

Outlaw tobacco but legalize marijuana? Talk about a world turned upside down!

Is this a restaurant/bar/public smoking ban or a ban on smoking tobacco period?

"If it was so great in California, move back there."

No, Lefties like to vote for every destructive thing they can think of, and then leave to infect another nearby state. Look what the Lefties fleeing their mess in NY have done to NH and VT. There ought to be some way to quarantine them so they are forced to bear the consequences of their irresponsible voting and leave others alone.

What is this smoking ban thing? Are they going to ban smoking in the casinos?

I need to pay attention, because we are to go to Las Vegas in May, and if I can['t smoke, I am staying home.

The ban is on indoor smoking in any restaurant, and any bar that serves food.

The casino floor remains exempt.

Is this why so many people are moving down South? I assume people moving South is why besides illegals the population is growing so fast. Anyways, it would be good to know if people are moving to the South cause they are sick and tired of the nanny blue states.

LAS VEGAS — Neither of two competing measures on next month's ballot to restrict smoking in Nevada dares to prohibit smoking in casinos. The gaming-floor exemption to both smoking-ban proposals reflects Nevada's libertarian attitude toward compulsive behavior and the understanding that smoking, drinking and gambling go hand in hand.

Preventing gamblers from smoking, the assumption goes, would be bad for business, and therefore bad for the state. Some gaming insiders are quietly worried that in the next decade, a wave of public opinion may be calling for a total ban on casino smoking. But evidence suggests that Nevada could acclimate to nonsmoking casinos and that the gaming industry could actually benefit by it over the long haul — while cutting casino employees' health risks.

Question 5 on the ballot would ban smoking in most venues save for casino gaming floors. The initiative exempts bars that don't serve meals, although most Nevada bars — partly to comply with a law allowing slot machines in bars only if gaming is "incidental" to business — also prepare food.
Question 4, backed by gaming interests as a response to Question 5, would ban smoking in retail stores, galleries, libraries, museums and similar places that already tend to be nonsmoking, while allowing bars as well as grocery stores and convenience stores with slots to continue to accommodate smokers in those gambling alcoves.

If both petitions get more than half of the vote, the petition with more votes would win.

The gaming industry's opposition to smoking bans is based on anecdotal information about customer preferences and a longstanding belief that smokers, who tend to gamble more than nonsmokers, have a right to smoke. "It would make our job easier if no one smoked, but the fact is that they do," said Judy Patterson, executive director of the American Gaming Association. "We have to balance two sets of needs." To accommodate nonsmokers, some casinos have improved their ventilation systems, leading to noticeably cleaner air. But not all casinos can afford to install the latest technology.

While there are long-standing assumptions that a smoking ban would hurt the casino industry, there is substantial evidence suggesting that smoking bans do not hurt businesses — and over time might help them. The casino trade publication Global Gaming Business will soon report a study it commissioned concluding that casinos might pick up more business than they would lose if they banned smoking. In one poll, 31 percent of casino customers questioned indicated they would visit casinos more often if they were smoke-free, compared with 11 percent who said they would patronize another casino that allowed smoking, according to Global Gaming Business Editor Roger Gros. "Most casino executives realize that the horse has left the barn and they're going to have to consider (a smoking ban) now or later," he said.

Dozens of studies indicate that the effects of smoking bans on bars and restaurants in other states, while perhaps not as rosy as some anti-smoking groups would submit, aren't nearly as gloom-and-doom as predicted. Government-funded, peer-reviewed studies by academics tend to conclude that smoking bans have had a neutral-to-positive effect on business. Studies funded by the tobacco industry or other business groups suggest the opposite, by downplaying the potential increase in business over time from nonsmoking customers.

Casino executives have not needed to weigh in on the issue so far, because of successful efforts over the years to fend off smoking restrictions. "We don't buy the premise that this is California or New York," said Ron Drake, owner of the Point After Lounge in Las Vegas and a board member of the Nevada Tavern Owners Association, which is backing Question 4. "This is a unique economy based on gaming revenue. Smoking is very much a part of (gamblers') lives."

We have a number of hot propositions on the ballot - smoking ban, marijuana legalization etc.

Outlaw tobacco but legalize marijuana? Talk about a world turned upside down!

I read where they want to legalize pot and ban smoking.  Please don't tell me this stuff passed!!!!!

You hit the nail on the head.

In order to be a left wing, progressive liberal you have to hate America. You have to believe that the greatest country in the history of the planet Earth is no good.

Military might, McDonalds, Capitalism, tobacco, God, Hot Dogs, baseball...it's all bad.

It must be changed. We'll use ballot measures because we know in our liberal hearts that people want things to be different.

They'll agree with us that the USA and the idea of a free country is wrong.

Fascists are counting on people to vote for their personal preference as opposed to the American way of life.

I love this country. I'm bracing myself for next Tuesday when we find out if people in Nevada, Ohio, and Arizona reject Socialism despite their personal preference.

I fear I may be disappointed. Whether you smoke or not, reject this intrusion on private property and vote against these Nazi sponsored behavior modification programs on the ballot.

You may not like it for asthetic reasons, but you will be next. Send a message on behalf of freedom.

Carter has zero chance. Reid isn't all that secure here, I think. He will eventually be tied into a lot of land scandals.

Because Harry brings home the bacon for geezers in Vegas.

The last time I saw Harry up here in the weeds, it was 2000. Haven't seen him since. Harry can campaign in Vegas alone, cater to enough interests in Vegas and never have to worry about the rest of the state.

I've been saying up here in the weeds that we have a small window of opportunity to get our ducks in a row on the water issues and that the window will close after the real estate crash in Vegas and Reno is done.

Until then, we're going to see that Vegas and Reno were highly inflated in both price and demand, with much of the demand being nothing more than real estate speculation.

All things considered, I think the over-valuation is worse in Reno than in Vegas.
