Lawmaker is sued, but gets money.
A deadbeat Buffalo legislator who is being sued by Eliot Spitzer because she owes the state $18,000 just got some help from an unexpected source: Spitzer's running mate.
David Paterson, Spitzer's pick for lieutenant governor, forked over $3,000 to Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples (D-Buffalo) on Sept. 11, the day before Paterson and Spitzer coasted to a victory in the Democratic primary.
As attorney general, Spitzer sued Peoples two years ago to recover $17,871.11 plus interest she reportedly owes the state lottery division for unpaid bills.
She was a lottery agent for a liquor store in Buffalo her cousin operated.
Peoples still hasn't paid up. Two weeks ago, Spitzer's office filed a complaint in state Supreme Court in another bid to retrieve the funds, records show.
"I opened the store in my name for my cousin who mismanaged it," Peoples said. She referred questions to her lawyer, who didn't return a call for comment.
