CO-05th - Lamborn up big
[Greg Pollowitz 10/20 08:53 AM]

On Oct. 10th, I posted news that the race for the C0-05th was tied.  This was horrible news for Republicans as the district is very Republican.  A new poll out from SurveyUSA, however, tells a different story:
Lamborn Keeps CO5 House Seat for GOP: In an election in Colorado's 5th Congressional District today, 10/19/06, Republican Doug Lamborn defeats Democrat Jay Fawcett, 51% to 38%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KUSA-TV Denver. Lamborn wins by 24 points among men. The contest is tied among women. Lamborn gets 78% of Republican votes. Fawcett gets 81% of Democrat votes. Independents favor Fawcett by 2:1, but this is not enough to overcome the 27-point advantage Republicans have in the composition of CO5 likely voters. Those who approve of President George W. Bush's performance in office support Lamborn 17:1. Those who disapprove of Bush support Fawcett 8:1. President Bush's approval rating among CO5 likely voters is 53%. The election is in 19 days, on 11/7/06. Incumbent Republican Congressman Joel Hefley is retiring from Congress after 20 years in office. Lamborn won a bitterly contested Republican Primary 8/8/06, and Hefley has refused to endorse Lamborn.

Isn't it interesting how, suddenly, many of these polls show Republicans "surging" and, wow, gee whiz, maybe they won't lose the House after all, and . . . by next week, they will be right where I predicted: gaining a seat or two.

This should burst the 'RAT bubble--they thought they could really be competitive in this seat.

This reminds me, since this thread will likely draw other poll junkies. What happened to okstate? What did he say that got him banned?

When are you poor people going to learn. There are no Republicans up big anywhere. Conservatives are all staying home, the elections are over and we should all start getting used to that. The democrats have already won everyting everywhere and I have the NY Times to back it up./sarcasm

Yup, the limp-wristed cheerleaders for the left have all been saying in the Denver papers how this was going to be a big upset for the Republicans. I think these fairies in the media actually believe the lies they make up each day to print in their failing rags.

I think Marilyn Musgrave's and Barbara Cubin's reelections will also make them deeply saddened.

Watching the RINO's pout is fun, isn't it? They're doing it up in SD22 too since Kopp knocked Traylor off in the primary.

"Yup, the limp-wristed cheerleaders for the left have all been saying in the Denver papers how this was going to be a big upset for the Republicans...."

This cracks me up. This is a district where the Dems sponsored a right winger (John Anderson) for Sherrif just so they could have a (D) in county goverment. If you listen to Fawcett's ad's he never actually says he's a Dem, just talks about his record of service (ret LTC) and whatever. He actually had Murtha out to campaign for him, (it was a decidely LOW key event :) )

A big part of the moderate's death grip on CO politics is based on sneaking moderate R's into power in very conservative districts. They tried to do it in SD22 this year by having Norma Anderson resign and then appointing Kiki Traylor as her replacement, hoping that Kiki could win the primary as the incumbent. Kiki is a really nice, smart lady; but she's not conservative by any stretch of the imagination. They thought they had done the same thing in HD 28 two years ago, but Jim Kerr is turning out to be a pretty good representative.

Of course, the other half of the moderate power base is buckets of money from the RNC to scare conservatives out of running in the primaries or to fight conservatives in the primaries (e.g. Bob Schaffer).

This is good news. However, I would strongly oppose any candidacy by Lamborn for the Senate or Governorship in the future. While I hope he wins so the GOP will stay in power, I still say he's a bad candidate.

The only Colorado pubbie congressional seat I'm worried about is O'Donnell in CO 7.

And I agree that Lamborn is not ready for prime time.
