The international standard for determining obesity is the body-mass index (BMI), defined as one's weight in kilograms divided by the square of one's height in meters.

A person who is 1.80 meters (5 feet 11 inches) tall and weights 90 kilos (198 pounds) will be considered as overweight because his BMI -- 27.8 -- is above 25kg/m2, and would be classified as obese if weighing 100 kilos (220 pounds), yielding a BMI -- 30.8 -- above 30kg/m2.

Another idiotic use of BMI. BMI doesn't take into consideration the composition of body mass.

We used to have to worry about the hungry people worldwide. Now we have to worry about the fat people worldwide. At least the Official Issue Makers give us some diversity.

Question: I'm 5'8" tall, weigh 155 pounds, male. What is my BMI, and am I considered fat, skinny, obese?

Sorry, but quite predictably, that after getting us smokers, they are going after you folks that don’t quite measure up!

Geez, what was I thinking when I thought that I lived in a country that allowed its’ citizens to live free.

"Another idiotic use of BMI. BMI doesn't take into consideration the composition of body mass."

Well, I seriously doubt that it's going to throw the percentages off by that much, but it will some, particularly in the US, where you have a lot of guys who workout quite a bit.

I know "someone" who is technically overweight at 6' and 208 pounds, but this "someone" is also only around 10% bodyfat with a 33" inch weight, a six pack, and works out 5 days a week. And yes, that's part of the complete inadequacy of BMI.

Hope they don't all do aerobics at the same time. Could knock the earth out of orbit.

This is going to contribute to global warming. The weight of all these fat people are going to slow down the rotation of the earth. That means there will be less wind and it's going to get hot.

300 million obese worldwide...

Well, don't antagonize them. They start jumping up and down in unison and the dang Earth will fall out of orbit.

One billion people out of the world's six billion population are now considered overweight, compared with 800 million who do not have enough to eat.

Simple solution:

Kill the obese and feed them to the hungry.

Two problems, one stone.

"...bringing in its train a host of health and economic problems that could one day cripple economies,..."

The solution is to end all socialize healthcare. Return the cost of medical care back to the individual. It should not be society's problem to provide "free" medical care for it's citizens.

If the governement was not involved, then the problem would correct itself.

You can trace the rise in the cost of healthcare to the point when the individual quit paying for their own care, and third parties began picking up the cost.

This could be the cause of global warming. The excessive mass of these peeps is affecting the earths rotation causing the warming effect. Not to mention the methane.

This means that water and carbon are being pulled out of the ground and distributed outward, thereby slowing the earth's rotation. Combined with the implied increase in methane, this will "definitely" contribute to global warming. Dibs on the research grant!

BMI is stupid, I agree.

BMI states that I am a 21.4, considered the middle of the normal weight, when I know that for my body type, I am overweight.

BMI states that my husband is 27.7, considered overweight, when he is cut from muscle head to toe and has the Scottish, stocky build. HMMMMM.
