Fresno police confirmed the death of a man who held them at bay for seven hours after he shot two officers early Thursday.

11:08 a.m. : Fresno Deputy Police Chief Roger Enmark reported that a police officer who was shot several times has undergone surgery at University Medical Center and is in stable condition with wounds that are described as not life-threatening.

The other officer, who was shot once, was treated at UMC and has been released, Enmark said.

"The shooting was reported shortly after 3:30 a.m. at an apartment complex just north of Shaw and Brawley avenues.

Police said the officers were responding to a "call for service" when they were met with gunfire when they arrived.

The officers retreated to safety on their own after they were shot."

There's not much more here. The officers responded to a call for service and they were both shot. One of them was treated and released from the hospital, and the other remains hospitalized, but with non-life threatening injuries. The officers did not return fire, and the suspect killed himself.

Glad that the offices are alive, and I hope that they both return to full health quickly. I am also glad that the suspect did not kill the wife/girlfriend/child/sibling as has too often happened. Prayers for both him and his family, as well as for the continued health and safety of the responding offices.

In a televised report of the incident on KMPH TV 26, the police said this was an ambush. The suspect, James Lunsford, age 25, made a distress call. He could be heard firing the weapon by the dispatcher. He told the police that he had a friend who was suicidal, when in fact, he was home alone. He was on the balcony and he invited them to come up, and he opened up. He hit one officer in the leg, and the other officer was shot five times.

Police said that more than 20 shots were fired by Lunsford.

The thanks belong to the Law Enforcement Officers who risk their lives to save the lives of others.

I hope they do well.

I remember a time when the Fresno Police were as respected as the Oakland Police.

"Yes sir. No sir. Yes sir..."

Then Jerry Brown, who wants to be AG, was elected governor.

An excerpt from the Fresno Bee:

"Lunsford called 911 to report that a person he called his boyfriend, George, was suicidal and high on cocaine and heroin, Lt. Randy Dobbins said.

Police interviewed Lunsford's girlfriend Thursday. She told police Lunsford wasn't gay.

Thursday's shooting may have been Lunsford's second attempt to ambush police officers, Dyer said: Lunsford called police Oct. 13 to report something suspicious and was sitting on his balcony when police arrived at his home at 3655 W. San Jose Ave.

That night, nothing happened.

Early Thursday, when officers Messick and Shipman arrived, Lunsford was standing on his balcony, unarmed. He told officers his boyfriend was inside on the first floor and that the suicidal man was scared.

He tossed a set of keys down to the officers, inviting them inside his gate. They let themselves in, and walked about 15 feet to Lunsford's front door. Then, as one officer put the key in the door, Lunsford leaned from his balcony and opened fire on the officers from behind, Dyer said."

Additional information was that he was on probation out of Bakersfield for a DUI and he was facing a demotion from supervisor at his job, and he took it pretty hard.

Pinging those who expressed their prayers for the two officers. They have returned to duty.

"Two Fresno police officers shot in the line of duty in October have returned to work.

Officer Daniel Messick, 27, is on a modified work schedule. Officer Trevor Shipman, 22, was to return to full duty as a patrol officer at 9 p.m. Tuesday."
